In the mid-20th century, the advancement in cardiac surgery has created a need and demand for an artificial source that helps in stimulating the heart muscle. Initially, the scientist developed large-size external devices causing discomfort in patients. Later, the advancement in technology has resulted in the miniaturization of electronic circuitry and eventually the development of totally implantable devices. These advancements continue till date, with the recent introduction of leadless pacemakers, that are directly implanted within the cardiac chamber.
