The transformation of the Chinese economy is a major topic in the media these days, covered by publications as diverse as the Wall Street Journal, Al Jazeera and Xinhua. It is also a focus of high-level Chinese politicians such as Wen Jiabao and his successor as Prime Minister, Li Keqiang. The aim of this paper is firstly to give an overview of the type of transformation to be expected within the next 10-20 years and secondly to discuss its general impact on the chemical industry in China.Finally, the consequences of economic transformation for specific segments of the chemical industry will be discussed.Such an analysis may provide industry participants with insights regarding the relative attractiveness of different chemical products and segments, and thus may be a useful input for strategic and investment decisions.The transformation of the Chinese economy will have a substantial impact on the chemical industry.However, the impact depends much more on the specific chemical segment than on the general properties of the chemical industry.
