Photonic systems that transmit and process microwave-frequency analog signals have traditionally been encumbered by relatively large signal distortion and noise. Optical phase modulation (PM) and frequency modulation (FM) are promising techniques that can improve system performance. In this dissertation, I discuss an optical ltering approach to demodulation of PM and FM signals, which does not rely on high frequency electronics, and which scales in linearity with increasing photonic integration. I present an analytical model, lter designs and simulations, and experimental results using planar lightwave circuit (PLC) lters and FM distributed Bragg rector (DBR) lasers. The linearity of the PM and FM photonic links exceed that of the current state of-the-art.

Network on chip is an emerging interconnection paradigm to address the scalability of traditional bus architecture. Time-critical systems need the capability to control packet delays in a network on-chip. The inflexibility and/or non-composability reduce the scalability of several proposed real-time service approaches for hard real-time networks onchip. In the era of “dark silicon” when large portions of multicore chips are turned off to save energy and control temperature, the incremental deployment capability of applications is crucial. In incremental deployment, application components are turned on and off. For time-critical applications, these components need to be composable in the sense that new incoming applications should not affect the behaviors of existingapplications. In this paper, we propose a composable and flexible work-conserving packet scheduling discipline for hard real-time networks on chip. Our scheduling discipline employs an earliest deadline first (EDF) scheduler, which reduces average packet delays by 80% in comparison with a previous non-work-conserving EDF scheduling discipline running on the same 8[1]8 network with various popular traffic patterns. Our proposed scheduling discipline provides guaranteed service without sacrificing high consistent average performance. We also derive sufficient buffer sizes for our scheduling discipline. However, our scheduling discipline incurs a reasonable communication overhead.

The strong market demand for mobile applications such as iPhone makes value on the formfactor of the mobile devices. The form factor means how much we can integrate many functionsin a given size of the mobile devices. The external component size is almost comparable to achip size so that elimination of external component is crucial to the success of mobile devices inaddition to the cost issues of the external components. External reference resistors are often usedas the standard for calibrating voltage sources, current sources, and other component values within a circuit. Often these calibrations occur at a factory, but may also occur on an electronicdevice as it is used. However, external reference resistors consume area and cost and it is desirable to eliminate them.

Tunneling based field effect transistors (TFETs) have the potential for very sharp On/Off transitions. This can drastically reduce the power consumption of modern electronics. They can operate by either electrostatically controlling the thickness of the tunneling barrier or by exploiting a sharp step in the density of states for switching. We show that current TFETs rely on controlling the thickness of the tunneling barrier but they do not achieve the desired performance. In order to get better performance we need to also exploit a sharp step in the density of states.

The growth of smartphone technology in today’s society has paved way for a myriad of consumer applications that target various aspects of our lives. One such area lies withinthe health and wellness category and relates to our dietary and eating habits. However,the percentage of downloaded applications in the health category is dominated by thosein the gaming category on both markets from Android and Apple. Thus, in conjunction with the health start-up Blue Goji as an industry partner, this project proposes a solution through the introduction of crowdsourcing and social elements into the mealjournal process in order to increase user retention. Existing smartphone applications targeting this sector are investigated and their benefits and shortcomings are analyzedin order to in to aid in developing a new application that will engage more users intracking their eating habits for the purposes of improving their health. Through feedback from user study groups, changes to the application are made to align itwith the customer’s true needs and the application concept is evolved through multipleiterations. Finally, future improvements and suggestions for alternative ideas are proposed with regards to the final prototype produced for the project.

Matrix multiplication is a fundamental kernel of many high performance and scientific computing applications.Most parallel implementations use classicalO(n3)matrix multiplication, even though there exist algorithms with lower arithmetic complexity. We recently obtained a new Communication-Avoiding Parallel Strassen algorithm (CAPS), based on Strassen’s fast matrix multiplication, that minimizes communication (SPAA’12). It ommunicates asymptotically less than all classical and all previous Strassen-based algorithms, and it attains theoretical lower bounds. In this paper we show that CAPS is also faster in practice. We benchmark and compare its performance to previous algorithms on Hopper (Cray XE6), Intrepid (IBM BG/P), and Franklin (Cray XT4). We demonstrate significant speedups over previous algorithms both for large matrices and for small matrices on large numbers of processors.We model and analyze the performance of CAPS and predict its performance on future exascale platforms.

we designed a circuit that inductively harvests electrical energy from the power flowing through the plug prongs when the device is turned on. That signal is rectified into a DC component that charges a capacitor to power the whole network node, while the AC ripple is converted by a sensor mote into a digital communication packet that signifies the amount of power (along with other relevant data) being consumed in a given window of time.
