Software-defined radios (SDRs) provide researchers with a powerful and flexible wireless communications experimentation platform. GNU Radio is the most popular open-source software toolkit for deploying SDRs, and is frequently used with the Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP). After establishing a USRP testbed, the researcher will need to implement new signal processing algorithms or modify existing ones. This document describes this process, highlighting those details that have received minimal attention in the existing documentation.

An advanced energy management and control system in an existing building in the Construction and Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) for Army at Urbana-Champaign (IL) was demonstrated. The medium-size office building underwent a retrofit of the HVAC system and controls employing a technology called optimal Model Predictive Control (MPC) which offers significant potential for saving energy by providing a means to dynamically optimize various sub-systems to take advantage of building utilization and weather patterns, and utility rate structures. A multi-variable optimization problem to minimize energy consumption and cost while guaranteeing zonal comfort over a 3 hour predictive horizon was formulated and solved periodically on line. The algorithms were integrated with the building automation system and evaluated experimentally at the demonstration site. A 45-50reduction in HVAC system energy use was demonstrated while improving occupant comfort. A 10-15installation cost reduction was accomplished due to the use of a robust wireless sensor network versus a fully wired network.

NASA pushes telerobotics to distances that span the Solar System. At this scale, time of flight for communication is limited by the speed of light, inducing long time delays, narrow bandwidth and the real risk of data disruption. NASA also supports missions where humans are in direct contact with robots during extravehicular activity (EVA), giving a range of zero to hundreds of millions of miles for NASA s definition of "tele". . Another temporal variable is mission phasing. NASA missions are now being considered that combine early robotic phases with later human arrival, then transition back to robot only operations. Robots can preposition, scout, sample or construct in advance of human teammates, transition to assistant roles when the crew are present, and then become care-takers when the crew returns to Earth. This paper will describe advances in robot safety and command interaction approaches developed to form effective human-robot teams, overcoming challenges of time delay and adapting as the team transitions from robot only to robots and crew. The work is predicated on the idea that when robots are alone in space, they are still part of a human-robot team acting as surrogates for people back on Earth or in other distant locations. Software, interaction modes and control methods will be described that can operate robots in all these conditions. A novel control mode for operating robots across time delay was developed using a graphical simulation on the human side of the communication, allowing a remote supervisor to drive and command a robot in simulation with no time delay, then monitor progress of the actual robot as data returns from the round trip to and from the robot. Since the robot must be responsible for safety out to at least the round trip time period, the authors developed a multi layer safety system able to detect and protect the robot and people in its workspace. This safety system is also running when humans are in direct contact with the robot, so it involves both internal fault detection as well as force sensing for unintended external contacts. The designs for the supervisory command mode and the redundant safety system will be described. Specific implementations were developed and test results will be reported. Experiments were conducted using terrestrial analogs for deep space missions, where time delays were artificially added to emulate the longer distances found in space.

Air traffic controllers are often required to simultaneously communicate with several aircraft over multiple radio frequencies. As a result, during peak loading, it is common for the controller to receive multiple concurrent communications, each from a different aircraft, making it difficult to discern audio messages received from multiple pilots simultaneously. To address this problem, a modified air traffic control (ATC) interface was prototyped with the goal of increasing controller-to-pilot communication efficiency. This prototype included supplementary text cueing which was provided by a hypothetical automated text to speech system in an on-screen text box for controller reference in the event of an obscured or indiscernible radio call. The prototype was then evaluated by a group of 35 participants, all with ATC experience including 12 students and 23 instructors at the Air Force controllers' school house Keesler AFB, MS. The text cueing improved controllers' comprehension of pilots' transmissions.

With the results of these simulations, two- and three-dimensional representations of the area without communication coverage and area with coverage were developed, showing the size and shape of the communication coverage gap projected in space. Also, the significance of this communication coverage gap is analyzed from the simulation data. To analyze the extent of this gap and other coverage limitations, simulations of the DSN architecture were performed. In addition to the physical properties of the DSN assets, the simulation incorporated communication forward link calculations and azimuth/elevation masks that constrain the effects of terrain for each DSN antenna. Analysis of the simulation data was performed to create coverage profiles with the receiver settings at a deep space altitudes ranging from 2 million to 10 million km and a spherical grid resolution of 0.25 degrees with respect to longitude and latitude.

This report describes the architecture, functionality and the field demonstration of a newly developed dedicated short-range communication (DSRC)-based Vehicle to Infrastructure (V2I) communication system for improving traffic efficiency and safety in the work-zone related congestion buildup on US roadways. The goal was to develop a portable system that can be easily deployed at a work zone site to acquire and communicate important travel information, e.g., travel time (TT) and start of congestion (SoC) location to the driver.

Solution-processed thin-films of semiconducting carbon nanotubes as the channel material for flexible electronics simultaneously offers high performance, low cost and ambient stability, which significantly outruns the organic semiconductor materials. In this work, we report the use of semiconductor-enriched carbon nanotubes for high-performance integrated circuits on mechanically flexible substrates for digital, analog and radio frequency applications. The as-obtained thin-film transistors (TFTs) exhibit highly
uniform device performance with on-current and transconductance up to 15 microA/micron and 4 mircoS/micron. By performing capacitance-voltage measurements, the gate capacitance of the nanotube TFT is precisely extracted and the corresponding peak effective device mobility is evaluated to be around 50 sq cm/V/s.

Devices that provide hearing protection, situational awareness and radio communications are often referred to as Communications and Hearing Protection Systems (C&HPS). This report is the third in a series of three and focuses on the auditory localization performance obtained from two commercially available C&HPS: Nacre QuietPro and Silynx QuietOps. These two systems were selected from three C&HPS evaluated for attenuation characteristics in the first report and speech intelligibility in the second report; the third system provided insufficient attenuation to be included. Results of the auditory localization testing indicated that both C&HPS negatively affected auditory localization accuracy performed in background noise, but the observed decrement was not significantly different between the two systems. Evidence from objective measures of the systems such as directivity, calculation of interaural level differences (ILDs), and the measurement of input/output functions indicate that changes in binaural intensity difference cues were the primary factor driving the reduction in performance.

Bluetooth technology, which is used primarily to establish wireless personal area networks (WPANs), has been integrated into many types of business and consumer devices; examples include cell phones, laptops, automobiles, medical devices, printers, keyboards, computer mouse devices, and headsets. Bluetooth technology enables users to establish ad hoc networks supporting voice and data communications between a wide variety of devices that can be conveniently interconnected without the need for cables or wired connections.
