Application delivery controllers (ADCs) have evolved from basic server load balancingfunctional units to fully integrate with cloud workflows and provisioning systems so that theyhelp users enable fast roll-out of new applications to a mobilized work force, improve end-user satisfaction, and reduce the time and cost of application deployment. In this article, theauthors define the ADC and explain its evolution and how it works, point out the challenges acloud environment poses for an ADC, introduce a real-world ADC cloud product they helpedto develop, and detail how their ADCaaS works in the IBM? SmartCloud? Enterprise and IBMPureSystems? environments.

Photomedicine technologies can provide practical and cost-effective solutions for many military medical problems. This report contains results of twelve projects undertaken by researchers in the Wellman Center for Photomedicine at Massachusetts General Hospital. Seven projects focus on battlefield-related trauma and environmental exposure, and seek methods to preserve life and health by developing diagnostics and therapeutics. Five projects are directed to repair and replacement of tissue with the goal of salvaging tissue and improving rehabilitation.

Solid waste resource recovery in space is effected by pyrolysis processing, to produce light gases as the main products (CH.sub.4, H.sub.2, CO.sub.2, CO, H.sub.2O, NH.sub.3) and a reactive carbon-rich char as the main byproduct. Significant amounts of liquid products are formed under less severe pyrolysis conditions, and are cracked almost completely to gases as the temperature is raised. A primary pyrolysis model for the composite mixture is based on an existing model for whole biomass materials, and an artificial neural network models the changes in gas composition with the severity of pyrolysis conditions.

Enterprise integration is a unique value from IBM. Some of the use cases for big data technologiesthat customers have can be made possible only through integration. This requires integratingexisting information in the enterprise with the new streams of information outside of the enterprise.The desired types of analytics cannot be realized unless structured as well as unstructured,semi-structured data is analyzed together. While it is praiseworthy that the Army has acknowledged the value of Integrative Medicine (IM) in its Pain Management Task Force Final Report (2010), its vision for this enabler remains limited. IM is seen as having a place only in specialty care; IM research, while ongoing, is not centrally directed; and the Office of the Surgeon General lacks a voice that can speak for IM. Since IM offers the ability to reduce health care costs and improve Soldier resiliency, Army Medicine needs a vision for IM that will enable its full potential. The Patient-Centered Medical Home concept offers an opportunity to integrate IM into primary care; and a Consultant to The Surgeon General could insure both that IM research moves in the directions that the enterprise needs, and that IM has a champion at the highest levels of the organization. Once a strategic vision is in place, the Army can fully utilize IM’s ability to improve the care of its patients. The Army should also strongly consider a demonstration project of an IM-based clinic to prove this concept, and provide real-world cost and outcome data to guide further progress.

This guidance provides applicants of new drug applications (NDAs) and abbreviated new drug applications (ANDAs) with the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research's current thinking on the appropriate regulatory classification of pharmaceutical co-crystal solid-state forms. This guidance also provides information about the data that you, the applicant, should submit to support the appropriate classification of a co-crystal, as well as the regulatory implications of the classification. The recommendations in this guidance apply to materials that the Agency has not previously evaluated and determined to be pharmaceutical co-crystals. The recommendations do not apply to materials that the Agency has previously designated as salts, complexes, or other non-co-crystalline forms.

Recent improvements in the affordability and availability of high-resolution digital cameras, data loggers, embedded computers, and radio/cellular modems have advanced the development of sophisticated automated systems for remote imaging. Researchers have successfully placed and operated automated digital cameras in remote locations and in extremes of temperature and humidity, ranging from the islands of the South Pacific to the Mojave Desert and the Grand Canyon. With the integration of environmental sensors, these automated systems are able to respond to local conditions and modify their imaging regimes as needed. In this report we describe in detail the design of one type of automated imaging system developed by our group. It is easily replicated, low-cost, highly robust, and is a stand-alone automated camera designed to be placed in remote locations, without wireless connectivity.

The U.S. military is providing amputees with state-of-the-art prosthetic devices. In addition to walking and changing direction, amputees must be able to manage uneven terrain, crowded environments, stairs, ramps, and hills. The largest problem for a lower extremity amputee is falls. Falling history and balance confidence are associated with reduced mobility capability and social activity. The goal of this research effort is to rehabilitate individuals with lower extremity amputations to reduce falls using a novel training method. The training program utilizes a microprocessor-controlled treadmill designed to deliver task-specific training perturbations. The training consists of six, 30 minute sessions delivered over a 2-week period. Trunk motion and velocity was assessed using a perturbation test in an immersive virtual environment, since trunk kinematics has been shown to determine fall likelihood. We have enrolled 14 research subjects at the Naval Medical Center San Diego. Mean trunk flexion angle and velocity significantly improved after participating in the training program. The improved performance was maintained up to 6 months. Subjects reported decreased uncontrolled and semi-controlled falls in their free-living environment outside of the research laboratory. These results indicate that task-specific training is an effective rehabilitation method to reduce falls in persons with lower limb amputations.
