This paper presents the development of a versatile sensor platform that is well-suited for autonomous data acquisition in environmental monitoring. The key advantages of the platform are its compact design, implemented onboard sensors, wireless communication and further standard interfaces to connect application specific sensors. The sensor system is subsequently simple to install and the costs for the preparation and execution of a measurement task are low. The paper provides details of the platform design and key characteristics as well as data acquisition-, communication-, and data storage strategy. A practical exemplary application in the field of environmental monitoring - the determination of acceleration of plants due to wind load - is presented.

The Advanced Exploration Systems Program’s Atmosphere Resource Recovery and Environmental Monitoring (ARREM) project is working to mature optimum atmosphere revitalization and environmental monitoring system architectures. It is the project’s objective to enable exploration beyond Lower Earth Orbit (LEO) and improve affordability by focusing on three primary goals: 1) achieving high reliability, 2) reducing dependence on a ground-based logistics resupply model, and 3) maximizing commonality between atmosphere revitalization subsystem components and those needed to support other exploration elements. The ARREM project’s strengths include using existing developmental hardware and testing facilities, when possible, and and a well-coordinated effort among the NASA field centers that contributed to past ARS and EMS technology development projects.

In this chapter we target the problem of monitoring an environment with a team of mobile robots having on board video-cameras and fixed stereo cameras available within the environment. Current research regards homogeneous robots, whereas in this chapter we study highly heterogeneous systems and consider the problem of patrolling an area with a dynamic set of agents. The system presented in the chapter provides enhanced multi-robot coordination and vision-based activity monitoring techniques. The main objective is the integration and development of coordination techniques for multi-robot environment coverage, with the goal of maximizing the quality of information gathered from a given area thus, implementing a Heterogeneous mobile and reconfigurable multi-camera video-surveillance system.

In conclusion, in this chapter, we have reviewed the development of high-performance fiber nanosensors for environmental monitoring applications, realized by the combination of advanced nanostructured coatings based on SWCNTs with the optical fiber technology.In particular, the chapter starts with a wide review of the state of the art of carbon nanotube-based sensors for environmental monitoring, followed by a description of the operating principle of the fiberoptic nanosensors in the FP-type reflectometric configuration.

The overall aim is to conduct preliminary evaluations of new rehabilitation strategies and new functional assessment methods for homonymous hemianopia (HH) and spatial neglect (SN), disabling visual and cognitive perception conditions that commonly occur as a result of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) and stroke. Both HH and SN prevent detection of objects on the affected side, resulting in unsafe walking and driving. Using realistic tasks in virtual environments representative of everyday mobility challenges we are evaluating a novel optical device expansion prism (EP) glasses - combined with a new computerized perceptual-motor training regimen in helping people with HH and SN detect and avoid obstacles on the affected side. In the first year we developed the training software and prepared the functional assessments. In the second year we have made excellent progress in recruiting and running participants in the main pilot study, with a total of 25 participants screened and 14 enrolled.
There are about 15 visits for each participant, including about 6 visits for intensive computerized perceptual-motor training. Preliminary results are encouraging. After training there were significant improvements in the ability to accurately touch targets presented in areas of prism-expanded vision in the blind hemifield. Before training, the error in touching was 17 , which reduced significantly (p = 0.001) to only 1.0 after training (equivalent to seeing side accuracy). Blindside detection performance improved significantly when using the prism glasses both in a collision judgment task in a virtual walking simulator and a pedestrian detection task in a driving simulator. Recruitment and data collection are ongoing.

The research the National Cancer Institute (NCI) supports, both in our own laboratories and at institutions worldwide, is focused on the ultimate goal of helping cancer patients. That mission achieved through rigorous science extends to NCIs program on complementary and alternative medicine, also known as CAM. Among the highlights of NCIs CAM-related activities in fiscal year (FY) 2010, was the collaboration between NCI, the National Institutes of Healths Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) to co-fund two Botanical Research Centers. The Botanical Research Centers Program aims to promote collaborative, integrated, interdisciplinary study of botanicals, particularly those found as ingredients in dietary supplements, and to conduct research with high potential for being translated into practical benefits for human health.

The study was designed to identify clinically accessible molecular biomarkers of traumatic brain injury (TBI) prior to definitive clinical diagnosis using high throughput microRNA technology. Specifically, these studies were meant to identify, characterize, and validate microRNA biomarker species whose content in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) could help to distinguish TBI cases from the Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) veteran population. During the past years, we conducted a Biomarker Discovery study using a high-throughput Array chip platform and identified 18 candidate TBI small RNA biomarkers. Using independent Q-PCR assays, we confirmed that 13 of these candidate small RNA biomarker species are, indeed, significantly down-regulated in PBMC of TBI compared to non-TBI control veteran cases. Additionally, we used unsupervised clustering analysis and demonstrated that the differential regulation of these small RNA biomarkers in clinically accessible blood cells is capable of distinguishing between TBI and non-TBI OEF/OIF veteran cases. Lastly, we identified a 3-biomarker panel capable of distinguishing TBI from non-TBI control veteran cases with 89accuracy 82selectivity and
78specificity. The majority of TBI cases in our biomarker study were co-morbid with PTSD, and our non-TBI control cases were selected to match for PTSD diagnosis. Thus, our identified panel of 13 small RNA biomarkers likely represents biological indices selective for TBI. During the past year, we recruited 13 new cases (6 TBI and 7 non-TBI cases). Together with the cases recruited in previous years, we currently have a total of 83 cases, comprised of 17 TBI and 66 non-TBI control cases, which are available for Biomarker Validation studies.
