Many statistical techniques involve optimization. One of the technologies being tested at Ames Research Center as part of the logistics and repurposing project is heat melt compaction (HMC) of solid waste to reduce volume, remove water and render a biologically stable and safe product. Studies at Kennedy Space Center have focused on the efficacy of the heat melt compaction process for killing microorganisms in waste and specific compacter operation protocols, i.e., time and temperature required to achieve a sterile, stable product. The work. reported here includes a controlled study to examine the survival and potential re-growth of specific microorganisms over a 6-month period of storage after heating and compaction. Before heating and compaction, ersatz solid wastes were inoculated with Bacillus amyloliquefaciens and Rhodotorula mucilaginosa, previously isolated from recovered space shuttle mission food and packaging waste. Compacted HMC tiles were sampled for microbiological analysis at time points between 0 and 180 days of storage in a controlled environment chamber. In addition, biological indicator strips containing spores of Bacillus atrophaeus and Geobacillus stearothermophilus were imbedded in trash to assess the efficacy of the HMC process to achieve sterilization. Analysis of several tiles compacted at 180deg C for times of 40 minutes to over 2 hours detected organisms in all tile samples with the exception of one exposed to 180deg C for approximately 2 hours. Neither of the inoculated organisms was recovered, and the biological indicator strips were negative for growth in all tiles indicating at least local sterilization of tile areas. The findings suggest that minimum time/temperature combination is required for complete sterilization. Microbial analysis of tiles processed at lower temperatures from 130 deg C-150 deg C at varying times will be discussed, as well as analysis of the bacteria and fungi present on the compactor hardware as a result of exposure to the waste and the surrounding environment. The two organisms inoculated into the waste were among those isolated and identified from the HMC surfaces indicating the possibility of cross contamination.

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) promises to enable vigorous innovation, through separation of the control plane from the data plane, and to enable novel forms of network management, through a controller that uses a global view to make globally-valid decisions. The design of SDN controllers creates novel challenges; much previous work has focused on making them scalable, reliable, and efficient. However, prior work has ignored the problem that multiple controller functions may be competing for resources (e.g.,link bandwidth or switch table slots). Our Corybantic design supports modular composition of independent controller modules, which manage different aspects of the network while competing for resources. Each module tries to optimize one or more objective functions; we address the challenge of how to coordinate between these modules to maximize the overall value delivered by the controllers' decisions, while still achieving modularity.

Slow restoration due to chunk fragmentation is a serious problem facing inline chunk-based data deduplication systems: restore speeds for the most recent backup can drop orders of magnitude over the lifetime of a system. We study three techniques--increasing cache size, container capping, and using a forward assembly area--for alleviating this problem. Container capping is an ingest-time operation that reduces chunk fragmentation at the cost of forfeiting some deduplication, while using a forward assembly area is a new restore-time caching and prefetching technique that exploits the perfect knowledge of future chunk accesses available when restoring a backup to reduce the amount of RAM required for a given level of caching at restore time. We show that using a larger cache per stream--we see continuing benefits even up to 8 GB--can produce up to a 5-16X improvement, that giving up as little as 8% deduplication with capping can yield a 2-6X improvement, and that using a forward assembly area is strictly superior to LRU, able to yield a 2-4X improvement while holding the RAM budget constant.

Twenty years ago, when Captain Jean-Luc Picard ordered: "Tea, Earl Grey, hot" it emerged in a pot from the Star Trek replicator, a machine which made everything and anything from seemingly nothing. An image was created which is so ingrained in our perception of the possible future that 3D printing is perceived by many to be todays? equivalent of the replicator. Does it make sense to print everything and anything on a 3D printer? The media and countless amateur videos suggest that the possibilities are boundless, from a cake to a door handle, from designer shoes to a washer and 3D printing will replace traditional assembly line manufacturing in the near future. Traditional manufacturing has its drawbacks, especially mass production, but it can produce high quality for an amazingly low cost. 3D printing, on the other hand, generates items within a few hours which can be customized each time they are made. However, only in a very few cases can the quality of a mass produced item be attained via 3D printing. In this paper, we discuss glass manufacturing in the UK as an example.
