Modern mainstream programming languages distinguish between "atomic" (or sometimes "volatile") variables, which support concurrent access, ordinary data accesses with well-defines semantics. Concurrent accesses to an ordinary data variables, if one of those is an update, is defined as a data race. This distinctionis essential; these languages provide meaningful semantics only in the absence of data races. Code with data races not only allows inaccurate results; such code may completely and repeatably fail when recompiled or run on a different operating system version. In C and C++ data races are equivalent to assignments to out-of-bounds array elements; they can results in arbitrary failures, including application crashes, hangs, and inexplicably and completely wrong answers. These specifications, combined with implementation realities, make it infeasible to exploit "benign" data races to obtain performance, even if we are willing to tolerate approximate answers. Furthermore, even if we happen to get lucky, and code with data races happens to execute correctly with some compiler, the presence of atomic operations in languages like C and C++ means that data races provide at best inconsequential performance advantages and, in our experience, no scala bility advantages at all.

Case management applications and, more generally, people-centric processes involve the definition, resolution and communication of commitments for tasks over channels such as chat and email. Identifying and tracking tasks and commitments can help in streamlining the collaborative work in business environments. However, doing so proves challenging due to the syntactical, grammatical, and structural incompleteness of human conversations over chat and email channels. We present a novel approach to automatically identify tasks and commitment creation, delegation, completion, and cancellation in email and chat conversations, based on techniques from natural language processing and machine learning domains. We discover tasks and related parameters from the text of conversations, identify when acommitment to a task emerges and find the state changes of a commitment based features extracted from the text of the conversations. We have developed a prototype and evaluated our approach using real-world chat and email datasets. Our experiments shows high precision for create class i.e., 90% in emails (Enron email corpus) and 80% in a real-world chat dataset and also provides promising results for discharge, delegate, and cancel classes.

The unpredictable nature of bio-terrorism compels us to develop medical countermeasures that will enable authorities to treat individuals exposed to agents such as anthrax. We report the feasibility of producing a protective, human-derived, monoclonal antibody directed against the protective antigen (PA) of Bacillus anthracis in plants. This was achieved by transient expression using agroinfiltration of Nicotiana benthamiana plants. The resulting antibody was able to neutralize toxin activity in vitro and in vivo at a comparable level to that seen for its hybridoma-produced counterpart

Pedemis (PortablE Decoupled Electromagnetic Induction Sensor) is a time-domain handheld electromagnetic induction (EMI) instrument with the intended purpose of improving the detection and classification of UneXploded Ordnance (UXO). Pedemis sports nine coplanar transmitters (the Tx assembly) and nine triaxial receivers held in a fixed geometry with respect to each other (the Rx assembly) but with that Rx assembly physically decoupled from the Tx assembly allowing flexible data acquisition modes and deployment options. The data acquisition (DAQ) electronics consists of the National Instruments (NI) cRIO platform which is much lighter and more energy efficient that prior DAQ platforms. Pedemis has successfully acquired initial data, and inversion of the data acquired during these initial tests has yielded satisfactory polarizabilities of a spherical target. In addition, precise positioning of the Rx assembly has been achieved via position inversion algorithms based solely on the data acquired from the receivers during the on-time of the primary field. Pedemis has been designed to be a flexible yet user friendly EMI instrument that can survey, detect and classify targets in a one pass solution. In this paper, the Pedemis instrument is introduced along with its operation protocols, initial data results, and current status.
