In 2007, An Ultra High Injection Pressure (UHIP) fueling method has been demonstrated by Caterpillar Fuel Systems - Product Development, demonstrating ability to deliver U.S. Environment Protection Agency (EPA) Tier 4 Final diesel engine emission performance with greatly reduced emissions handling components on the engine, such as without NOx reduction after-treatment and with only a through-flow 50effective diesel particulate trap (DPT).This project resulted in two developments in 2011. The first development was a process and a machine specification by which a high target of compressive residual stress (CRS) can be consistently imparted to key surfaces of the fuel system to increase the toughness of the steel, and a demonstration of the feasibility of further refinement of the process for use in volume production.

Sound amalgams can be fabricated by substituting Ga-In liquid for mercury; Cu-coated steel fibers bond well with the amalgam components. Inclusion of steel fibers significantly improved mechanical properties. An application scenario utilizing amalgams for in-space parts fabrication and repair was suggested. Procedure and materials need to be optimized.

4113.铁路桥梁护栏腐蚀的检测和量化的可行性研究

The Center for Nondestructive Evaluation at Iowa State University has experience in development of measurement techniques and new sensors using a variety of interrogating energies. This research evaluated feasibility of three technologies—x-ray radiation, groundpenetrating radar (GPR), and magnetic flux leakage (MFL)—for detection and quantification of corrosion of embedded reinforcing steel.The methods provide useful and complementary information. GPR provides a rapid approach to identify reinforcing steel that has anomalous responses. MFL provides similar detection responses but could be optimized to provide more quantitative correlation to actual condition. Full implementation could use either GPR or MFL methods to identify areas of concern, followed by radiography to give a visual image of the actual condition, providing the final guidance for maintenance actions.

4114.难熔金属的扩散对合金——奥氏体、铁素体和马氏体不锈钢

This thesis utilized the diffusion couple approach to evaluate the addition of molybdenum, niobium, tantalum, and tungsten to 316 stainless (316SS) and alloy HT9 steels. Refractory elements have been previously studied as alloying candidates to mitigate problems such as radiation-induced segregation, void swelling, and irradiation creep in reactor steels. Diffusion couples were characterized via energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and nanoindentation to examine refractory element solubility, diffusivity, and the effects these elements have on hardness and elastic modulus in 316SS and alloy HT9.

4116.一种重型桥梁建造钢板的检测缺陷研究

The flaws in a heavy bridge-making steel plate (Q370qE) were detected by ultrasonic test,the types and formation reasons of which were studied by metallographic examination,scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectrometer.The results showed that the types of the flaws were mainly crack,micropore and inclusion.The formation of crack and micropore was attributed to the center segregation,porosity,as well as the role of structural stress and thermal stress.Moreover,the inclusions were mainly composite oxides (MgO,Al2O3,CaO,etc.) and MnS,the former came from the raw materials and impurity oxides,however,the latter came from the center segregation of the alloying elements.Besides,some improvement measures to reduce detecting flaws were also proposed.

We conducted a vehicle analysis to assess the feasibility of thermoelectric technology for waste heat recovery and conversion to useful electrical power and found that eliminating the 500 W of electrical power generated by the alternator corresponded to about a 7increase in fuel economy (FE) for a small car and about 6for a full size truck.We obtained critical vehicle level information for these driving cycles that enabled a highlevel design and performance analysis of radiator and exhaust gas thermoelectric subsystems for several potential vehicle platforms, and we identified the location and geometric envelopes of the radiator and exhaust gas thermoelectric subsystems.
