Identify existing technologies being used for air-to-air and air-to-ground communications. Identify relevant technologies that may mature and be applicable to future air-to-air or air-to-ground communications within the study 50 year time horizon. Identify and characterize communication candidates functional attributes and characteristics. Identify initial requirements for air-to-air / air-to-ground comm. to support future anticipated NextGen applications and map/assess the ability of the candidates to support Air Traffic Management (ATM) applications. Identify ground and airborne architectural and infrastructure needs of the candidates. Identify vulnerabilities and security challenges with comm. candidates and outline mitigation methods.

The project focuses on various aspects of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and its significance to today's automotive signal/data communication systems that include navigation, communication, safety, information and entertainment. The requirements of various data transmission networks (interconnecting wiring and connection system) to provide interface to various systems will be discussed. The importance of EMC assurance to minimize the systems emissions and susceptibility to electromagnetic Interference (EMI) will be examined. The research focuses on the identification of critical parameters that affect the performance of the data transmission network, the development of test methodology and the analytical techniques to properly define its performance characteristics.

Power Line Communication (PLC) systems provide a bi-directional communication platform capable of delivering data for a variety of Smart Grid applications such as home energy management and intelligent meter reading and control. One benefit of applying power line communication on power grid is that it provides an infrastructure that is much more comprehensive and widespread than other wired/wireless alternatives. Power line cables are a shared medium, therefore multiple PLC devices operate on the same frequency over the same power line may interfere with each other, thus reducing the effectiveness of these devices. This publication introduces the coexistence mechanism for the IEEE and ITU-T BB-PLC standards, and provides implementation guidelines for PLC devices to be used for smart grid applications.

We study the problem of assigning a group of mobile robots to an equal number of distinct static targets, seeking to minimize the total distance traveled by all robots until each target is occupied by a robot. In the first half of our paper, the robots assume limited communication and target-sensing range otherwise, the robots have no prior knowledge of target locations. Under these assumptions, we present a necessary and sufficient condition under which true distance optimality can be achieved. Moreover, we provide an explicit, non- asymptotic formula for computing the number of robots needed for achieving distance optimality in terms of the robots communication and target-sensing ranges with arbitrary guaranteed probabilities. We also show that the same bound is asymptotically tight. Because a large number of robots is required for guaranteeing distance optimality with high probability, in the second half of our study, we present suboptimal strategies when the number of robots cannot be freely chosen. Assuming that each robot is aware of all target locations, we first work under a hierarchical communication model such that at each hierarchy level, the workspace is partitioned into disjoint regions; robots can communicate with one another if and only if they belong to the same region. This communication model leads naturally to hierarchical strategies, which, under mild assumptions, yield constant approximations of true distance-optimal solutions. We then revisit the range-based communication model and show that combining hierarchical strategies with simple rendezvous-based strategies results in decentralized strategies which again achieve constant approximation ratios on distance optimality. Results from simulation show that the approximation ratio is as low as 1.4.

This report presents the results of the third and final research and development project of an implementable wireless travel time data collection system. Utilizing Bluetooth wireless technology as a platform, the prior projects focused on data collection hardware and network communication implementation. In this project the processing and synthesis of collected data was addressed. Results and procedures that address data filtering, travel time sample calculation, calculation of travel time statistics, travel time forecasting are described. Results for the use of collected data to estimate intersection performance are presented, as are the design and requirements for an automated travel time data collection system. The report includes a users manual.

This paper describes Dandelion, an algorithm that builds on the ideas of the rsync algorithm to eciently distribute information to all actors in a group over a shared broadcast medium. The algorithm is described in detail, as well as some experimental results using the algorithm on robots. Finally, theoretical comparisons to rsync and generic multicast trees are provided, as well as experimental comparisons between an implementation and a current version of the rsync program, showing that the costs of transmission are as low as a multicast tree, without the associated cost of building or maintaining a tree.

This thesis explores a novel network design concept to address the data and communications needs of the Department of Defense (DoD). This thesis evaluates broadband wireless data technologies in combination with High Altitude Platform (HAP) technologies. It proposes a network design concept to serve as a model for future research and the ultimate integration of HAPs into battlefield information architectures bringing the concepts of network centric warfare ever closer to reality.

The benefits of high data rates, high directionality, low sidelobes, small size, light weight, and low power of laser communications (lasercom) as compared to radio frequency (RF) communications make laser an attractive option for ship-to-ship communications. The realization of the option requires ship-to- ship lasercom system design and mission planning, which, in turn, necessitates a lasercom link budget analysis and a parametric analysis of lasercom system design and operational parameters.The link budget analysis determines whether the energy of a laser signal is adequately transmitted to a receiver. The parametric analysis determines the lasercom system design and operational parameters that meet ship-to-ship lasercom requirements.

This research project aims to develop a data collection application that enables real-time tracking and reporting of the health-related impacts of travel behavior. Using computing, communication, and sensing capabilities of smartphones, an Android phone application (named UbiActive) was developed to collect real-time travel-related physical activity and psychological well-being data from phone users. The application was tested on multiple Android phones, among which Nexus S and HTC Magic were found to produce comparable physical activity outputs with the commercially available accelerometer. The application was further tested in a three-week field study for its viability for real-time data collection and behavior intervention against unhealthy travel behavior.

Direct connection and reflective connection are commonly used in traditional Trojan's communication model,which have some significant deficiencies in hiding,anti-tracking,and efficiency.To improve the aspects above in traditional Trojan horse communication model,the author proposed a hybrid communication model based on P2P technology.The model uses P2P intranet penetration protocol to build the channel between the controlled station and the control station,and uses P2P node servers for saving the Trojan's status and transferring some data between the controlled and the control.The topology of networks for controller will be very flexible.Using the IP traceback technology will be difficult to track the controllers.Using UDP protocol in the hybrid communication model for data transmission will hide the network status.Control sites can work in distributed mode.By using the model,the hiding-ability,anti-traceability and communication efficiency will be greatly improved.
