In the context of image-guided left atrial fibrillation therapy, relatively very little work has been done to consider the changes that occur in the tissue during ablation in order to monitor therapy delivery. Here we describe a technique to predict the lesion progression and monitor the radio-frequency energy delivery via a thermal ablation model that uses heat transfer principles to estimate the tissue temperature distribution and resulting lesion. A preliminary evaluation of the model was conducted in ex vivo skeletal beef muscle tissue while emulating a clinically relevant tissue ablation protocol. The predicted temperature distribution within the tissue was assessed against that measured directly using fiberoptic temperature probes and showed agreement within 5℃ between the model-predicted and experimentally measured tissue temperatures at prescribed locations. We believe this technique is capable of providing reasonably accurate representations of the tissue response to radio-frequency energy delivery.

Common software synchronous sampling methods have some shortcomings such as sampling synchronization error,sampling interval error accumulation increment and so on,and the impact of this error on the measurement accuracy can not be ignored[1].In this paper,analysis on synchronization error occurrence reasons was performed,and proposed the synchronization implementation method of asynchronous sampling.This method can track the real-time changes of electrical signal by the zero-cross-over triggering circuit,and reduce the synchronization error by the software method.Simulation analysis of the signal cycle (frequency) and RMS measurement shows that proposed method improves accuracy of the electrical signal parameters measurement based on microprocessor technology.

The study of intact, living cells using non-invasive optical spec-troscopic methods offers the opportunity to assess cellular structure and organization in a way that is not possible with commonly used cell biology imaging techniques. We have developed a novel spectroscopic technique for diagnosing disease at the cellular level based on using low-coherence interferometry (LCI) to detect the angular distribution of scattered light. Angle-resolved LCI (a/LCI) combines the ability of LCI to isolate scattering from sub-surface tissue layers with the ability of light scattering spec-troscopy to obtain structural information on sub-wavelength scales. In application to examining cellular structure, a/LCI enables quantitative measurements of changes in the size and texture of cell nuclei. These quantitative measurements are characteristic of different pathological states. The capabilities of a/LCI were demonstrated using a clinical system that can be applied in endoscopic surveillance of esophageal tissue, producing high sensitivity and specificity for detecting dysplastic tissues in vivo. Experiments with in vitro cell samples also show the utility of a/LCI in observing structural changes due to environmental stimuli as well as detecting apoptosis due to chemotherapeutic agents.

The 'Fracture Putty' project was initiated to develop better, faster and more efficient methods to treat difficult fractures. This contract supported study of hydrogel polymers, which are polymerized under direct control of the operating surgeon, and are also designed for biologic cleavage by osteoclast specific proteases. Processes in bone growth and repair were studied in cell cultures, mice, rats, sheep, pigs, and feasibility of lymphatic imaging was demonstrated in humans. We believe this system is safe and efficacious and will lead to profound enhancements in patient care.

Internet of Things is an emerging area and it visions an inter-connected world full of physical as well as virtual objects, devices, processes and services capable of providing a different lens on how to link them via the Internet. While Internet of Things as part of the Future Internet has been described as a paradigm that mainly integrates and enables several technologies and communication solutions a notable interest is to define how current standard communication protocols could support the realization of the vision. Within this context, we offer a state-of-the-art review on ad hoc and wireless sensor networks, near field communications, radio frequency identification and routing protocols as a mean to describe their applicability towards an Internet of Things realization. We conclude by presenting a brief case scenario to describe a future smart environment and illustrate its possible model architecture.

In this project, we have (i) demonstrated modulation of the refractive index n >1 at near infrared frequencies during field effect gating of conducting oxide (ITO) thin films for switching applications; (ii) demonstrated record low coupling loss from silicon-on-insulator waveguides to dielectrically-loaded surface plasmon polariton waveguides with 1 dB/transition insertion loss and also metal-insulator-metal waveguides; (iii) developed a full format CMOS image sensor with plasmonic color filters; (iv) explored enhanced spontaneous emission in nanoscale plasmonic cavities and have experimentally observed enhanced spontaneous emission in polymer plasmonic structures; (v) developed CMOS Si photonic switching device based on the vanadium dioxide (VO2) phase transition. (vi) also engaged in a partnership with the CEA-LETI laboratory and developed a next generation plasMOStor plasmonic metal-insulator- metal device in CMOS Si photonics with copper metallization and SOI waveguide- coupled inputs and outputs.

Although prostate cancers are initially responsive to androgen deprivation therapy, castration resistant prostate cancer demands alternative treatment options. It has been reported that the apoptotic protease, caspase 2 (C2) is critical for prostate cancer cell death in several settings. Several reports have also indicated that fatty acid synthesis is critical for maintaining prostate cancer cell viability and that inhibition of fatty acid synthesis can lead to apoptosis. Finally, C2 is suppressed by high intracellular NADPH and this is not due to the redox effects of NADPH, suggesting that the synthetic role of NADPH (e.g., in fatty acid synthesis) may account for its ability to suppress apoptosis. Our new data suggest that manipulating metabolism, particularly inhibiting fatty acid synthesis, can alter chemosensitivity in prostate cancer cells.

Integrating large-scale renewable energy sources and electric vehicles into the power grid, Smart Charging and Vehicle-to-Grid of the electric vehicles play an important role for supply and demand matching in the power grid. The integrated control schemes considering the vehicle user's convenience, battery condition during the idle time, and grid-friendly contribution, have been designed. It is also important to implement the control schemes into the commercial electric vehicle and its supply equipment. This paper describes a laboratory test system of Smart Grid and E-Mobility consisted by an electric vehicle battery test bed, a bi-directional controllable charger, an interface controller with flexibility in communication and control, and a real-time digital simulator. Communication and control functions of each component are confirmed through fundamental experiments, and the load frequency control schemes are implemented to the system.

Military service members suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury (TBI), and depression, as well as military suicides, continue to be a major concern of Congress. Numerous legislative provisions have been enacted over the past years to address these issues. Members will likely seek to offer legislation in the 113th Congress to address this complex set of issues. This report is intended to provide assistance in understanding the issues associated with psychological health in the active duty forces, potential congressional responses, and what questions may remain unanswered. Key points in this report include the following: mental disorders such as PTSD are poorly understood and in most cases cannot be physically identified but, rather, must be diagnosed using symptoms reported by the servicemember; estimates of the prevalence of mental health conditions in any given population may be greatly affected by the methodology used; diagnoses of mental health conditions among active duty servicservice membersincreased substantially relative to non-deployed servicservice members increase may be due to the psychological toll of exposure to conflict, but may also be due in part to increased and improved screening methods as well as Department of Defense (DOD) efforts to reduce the stigma associated with seeking mental health treatment that might dissuade some servicservice membersreporting mental health concerns or accessing care; and reliable evidence is lacking as to the quality of mental health care and counseling offered in DOD facilities. A 2012 Institute of Medicine (IOM) study recommended that DOD undertake efforts to measure the effectiveness of efforts to improve quality, such as training providers in evidence-based practice, that are not integrated into the system of mental health care offered in DOD treatment facilities.
