This thesis is part of a larger project that will demonstrate the feasibility of powering a commercially sized 7.5-ton cooling system. Excess cooling will be stored thermally using ice. This system has the potential to be used in military bases to reduce energy costs and fossil fuel consumption. A scaled down version would be suitable for data centers and forward operating bases where the transport of fuel can be costly and dangerous. The system will be built and operated at the Turbopropulsion Laboratory (TPL) of Naval Postgraduate School. This thesis concentrates on the choice and location of wind turbines used to power the cooling system. A simulation of Building 216, which is the planned site of the cooling system, was performed. A wind flow analysis found that optimum placement of the wind turbines is at the front of the south end of the building. The method for placing the wind turbines is outlined and applicable to other structures. Vertical Axis Wind Turbines (VAWTS) were found to be the most suitable for site location. A transient analysis of the VAWTS was necessary to accurately simulate their performance. This supported the selection of a three-bladed helical VAWT design. Further simulations of wind turbine separation showed some beneficial effects of close spacing.

In this project, we explore two forms of user authentication, alternative to the alpha-numeric password, through utilization of various hardware components in a modern smartphone. These components act as input channels for biometric and geolocative data, which can be used to validate the identity of a user through gesture-based authentication (via the accelerometer and orientation sensor) and locationbased authentication (via the WIFI sensor). We develop an Android application that incorporates these two authentication methods. We implement two different gesture-based authentication algorithms adapted from existing work done in this field of security research. We find that one algorithm is more convenient to train and implement than the other algorithm, but also performs more poorly in terms of accuracy compared to the other algorithm. We also implement a location-based authentication algorithm based on scanning the WIFI access points around the user’s current location. We introduce thresholds into the algorithm to provide tolerance and robustness against inconsistent WIFI access points, and these thresholds show improvement in the algorithm’s performance.

Recent and anticipated trends indicate that renewable resources, particularly wind and solar energy, will provide a growing contribution to the U.S. and global power systems in the coming decades. These resources are variable and uncertain by nature, and their impacts on system expansion and operation need to be properly accounted for in electric system models. To this end, we introduce a new capacity expansion model, the Resource Planning Model (RPM), with high spatial and temporal resolution that can be used for mid- and long-term scenario planning of regional power systems. RPM endogenously and dynamically considers grid integration of renewable resources, including transmission and interconnection availability and costs, renewable resource limits and output characteristics, and dispatch options for conventional generators, in its optimal generator and transmission decision-making. As an hourly chronological model with a highly discretized regional structure, RPM provides a framework where various future scenarios can be explored while ensuring that the scenarios include many aspects of grid reliability. Although the structure of RPM was designed to be adaptable to any geographic region, here we describe an initial version of the model adapted for the power system in Colorado. We present example scenario results from this first version of RPM, including an example of a 30-by-2020 renewable electricity penetration scenario. Under the assumptions used, the preliminary scenario analysis demonstrates that wind technologies are the dominant contributors to this 30-by-2020 renewable electricity scenario and that renewable generation largely displaces natural gas. This displacement results in annual carbon dioxide (CO2) emission reductions of approximately 12. We find that under the least-cost deployment solution from the model, new wind capacity is largely deployed in the north-central and southeastern regions of Colorado and utility-scale solar capacity is largely deployed in the Front Range urban corridor, along with northwestern and south-central Colorado regions.

The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA), as a standards development organization, sponsored the development of recommended practices (RP) for offshore wind turbine facilities and published its RP report in 2012. The challenges faced by the emerging offshore wind energy industry parallel many of the challenges that were faced by the offshore oil and gas industry in its infancy. These challenges are documented and addressed in the development of the AWEA RP and are described in this paper. The paper discusses how the more mature American Petroleum Institute oil and gas standards were interfaced with International Electrotechnical Commission and other wind turbine and offshore industry standards to provide guidance for reliable engineering design practices of these mechanically dynamic, fatigue-driven offshore wind energy systems. Uncertainties requiring further validation and analysis are also described.

The piezoelectric effect is a phenomenon where strain on a piezoelectric crystal structure causes potential difference at its ends. By merging piezoelectric materials and microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), mechanical vibration could cause the necessary displacement in MEMS to create a potential difference that could be used to power electronic devices. Developing new sustainable energy sources and using energy more efficiently is at the forefront of several research initiatives and is a clear priority for the Department of the Navy s strategic planning. This thesis aims to design a vibrational energy harvesting MEMS device to harness vibrational waste energy with the goal of producing power for naval applications. The development and widespread use of vibrational harvesting MEMS would aid the effort to meet each of these goals in the Department of the Navy. Any shore based, seagoing, or expeditionary mechanical platform could serve as a kinetic energy source for vibration energy harvesting MEMS. This thesis investigates the physics, materials, design, optimization, and microfabrication process in the creation of such a device. Time-dependent finite element models for two designs have been developed, simulating electrical power output. Microfabrication processes for the designs have also been developed.

This project has supported the analysis and design of large-scale wireless networks for army applications, including information dissemination algorithms for fixed wireless and mobile wireless networks, energy management algorithms for sensor networks, resilience of wireless networks to virus epidemics, network coding capacity of wireless networks, coding for mobile wireless networks, polar coding for multiple-access networks, and the capacity of wireless relay networks. The project has supported the education and research activities of a postdoctoral fellow and a graduate student.

In this document, CVM compares studies that use active controls to studies that use either placebo concurrent controls or untreated concurrent controls. CVM uses these comparisons to illustrate the appropriate use of an active control.

Heat stroke (HS) is a life-threatening illness induced by prolonged exposure to a hot environment that causes central nervous system abnormalities and severe hyperthermia. Current data suggest that the pathophysiological responses to heat stroke may not only be due to the immediate effects of heat exposure per se but also the result of a systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). The observation that pro- (e.g., IL-1) and anti-inflammatory (e.g., IL-10) cytokines are elevated concomitantly during recovery suggests a complex network of interactions involved in the manifestation of heat-induced SIRS. In this study, we measured a set of circulating cytokine/soluble cytokine receptor proteins and liver cytokine and receptor mRNA accumulation in wild- type and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) receptor knockout mice to assess the effect of neutralization of TNF signaling on the SIRS following HS. Using a systems approach, we developed a computational model describing dynamic changes (intra- and extracellular events) in the cytokine signaling pathways in response to HS that was fitted to novel genomic (liver mRNA accumulation) and proteomic (circulating cytokines and receptors) data using global optimization. The model allows integration of relevant biological knowledge and formulation of new hypotheses regarding the molecular mechanisms behind the complex etiology of HS that may serve as future therapeutic targets. Moreover, using our unique modeling framework, we explored cytokine signaling pathways with three in silico experiments (e.g. by simulating different heat insult scenarios and responses in cytokine knockout strains in silico).
