This research used systems architecture to develop a model that determined the effect of Integrated System Health Management (ISHM) on mission success rates for unmanned aerial systems (UAS). To evaluate this effect, a simulation model was developed and used to analyze the difference between mission success rates for a theoretical UAS with and without ISHM. Design of Experiments analysis techniques were used to map a response surface that modeled the difference between mission success rates calculated for current health management technology and ISHM. Using representative data for a UAS, the analysis determined that the failure distribution parameters, sensor quality (which determines the relationship between probability of detection and probability of false alarm), and probability of an imminent fault during a mission were significant to the model. The result of the model determined that ISHM can result in a significant improvement on mission assurance, especially when implemented with higher quality sensors and on vehicles where the probability of imminent failure is higher relative to the mission times and time between preventative maintenance. This appears consistent with the premise that ISHM can support an extension of preventative maintenance intervals with an attendant reduction in sustainment cost.

This test was conducted as part of the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Independent Testing project. The project was established to help reduce the barriers of wind energy expansion by providing independent testing results for small turbines. Several turbines where selected for testing at the National Wind Technology Center (NWTC) as a part of the Small Wind Turbine Independent Testing project. Duration testing was one of up to five tests that could be performed on the turbines. Other tests included power performance, safety and function, noise, and power quality. Cascade Engineering, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, distributor of the Renewable Devices SWIFT turbine in North America, was the recipient of the DOE grant and provided the turbine for testing. The test equipment included a grid-connected SWIFT wind turbine mounted on a 13.7 meter (45-ft) free standing monopole. The system was installed by the NWTC Site Operations group with guidance and assistance from Cascade Engineering.

Widespread technological development and deployment have created an abundance of data sources for traffic monitoring. A database that integrates data from all these technologies would maximize coverage of the network, given the available data. Sometimes, however, there are multiple independent measurements of the current traffic conditions for a particular portion of the network. In these cases, a variety of data fusion techniques can be used to achieve better estimates while helping to overcome information overload. This paper discusses several techniques for fusing data from competitive sensor configurations, describes the analytical foundation of these techniques, and interprets how each technique might be used most appropriately. In addition, these data fusion techniques are implemented and compared relative to their ability to accurately and reliably estimate traffic speeds. A real-world case study in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, demonstrates that estimates from data fusion techniques that pull loop detector data and probe vehicle data from an integrated database are more accurate and reliable than estimates based on individual data sources. Consequently, these data fusion-based estimates can be taken with greater certainty and confidence.

In this thesis we address the problem of the temporal scalability of pose graphs models for long-term simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). We present a SLAM system using two different sensor modalities: imaging sonars for underwater navigation and vision based SLAM for terrestrial applications. In the underwater domain we consider two different applications. First, we describe our implementation of real-time imaging sonar aided navigation applied to in-situ autonomous ship hull inspection using the hovering autonomous underwater vehicle (HAUV). Second, we develop a feature-based navigation system supporting multi-session mapping, and provide an algorithm for re-localizing the vehicle between missions. We use a pose graph representation for the mapping. One of the problems with the pose graph formulation is that the state space continuously grows as more information is acquired. To address this we propose the reduced pose graph (RPG) model which partitions the space to be mapped and uses the partitions to reduce the number of poses used for estimation. To evaluate our approach, we present results using an online binocular visual SLAM system. We demonstrate long-term mapping using approximately nine hours of data collected in the MIT Stata Center, demonstrating mapping of a large environment an extended period of time.

Broadly, this project involved the development and delivery of a new curriculum in wind energy engineering at the Pennsylvania State University; this includes enhancement of the Renewable Energy program at the Pennsylvania College of Technology. The new curricula at Penn State includes addition of wind energy-focused material in more than five existing courses in aerospace engineering, mechanical engineering, engineering science and mechanics and energy engineering, as well as three new online graduate courses. The online graduate courses represent a stand-alone Graduate Certificate in Wind Energy, and provide the core of a Wind Energy Option in an online intercollege professional Masters degree in Renewable Energy and Sustainability Systems. The Pennsylvania College of Technology erected a 10 kilowatt Xzeres wind turbine that is dedicated to educating the renewable energy workforce. The entire construction process was incorporated into the Renewable Energy A.A.S. degree program, the Building Science and Sustainable Design B.S. program, and other construction-related coursework throughout the School of Construction and Design Technologies. Follow-on outcomes include additional non-credit opportunities as well as secondary school career readiness events, community outreach activities, and public awareness postings.

In this paper, on-board Measurements of particle emissions were carried out on a VW diesel car in Shanghai real roads.The test fuels included pure petroleum diesel (D100) and three different alternative fuel blends, 10% biodiesel blend (BD10), 10% coal-to-liquid fuel blend (C10) and 10% gas-to-liquid fuel blend (G10) in volumetric mixture ratio.Results showed that particle emissions in freeways were terrible, and particle number emission ratios from urban roads were high.The test alternative blend fuels of BD10, Bul0, G10 and C10 all have positive effects on the particle emissions of test diesel car.

In order to deal with the conflict of the robot high-performance implementing the task in an uncertain environment,environmental modeling method based on ultrasonic ranging was adopted.By the complex environmental modeling mean of combining the methods of grid and geometry,relying the measurement data of the adjacent multi-ultrasonic and the correlation among the data,the environmental modeling was established effectively.The modeling characteristics analysis showed that:the robot can easily make obstacle avoidance,path planning and decision-making in the grid-based modeling.The accuracy of the modeling is high,and it can detect and update the complex regional expediently.The environmental modeling based on ultrasonic ranging can effectively solve the problem of mobile robot implementing the tasks efficiently in the actual complex environment.

The LRT system in Denver, Colorado, connects the downtown with neighborhoods to the North, but primarily stretches southwards, travelling in existing transportation corridors carrying freeways and a heavy rail system. Outside of the downtown areas, the siting of the LRT system alongside the rigid infrastructure that comprises the heavy rail system and the freeway systems severely inhibits pedestrian accessibility to the transit system. To help further understand how the level of accessibility varies across the system, a systematic pedestrian level-of-service index for each station within the system was created that takes into account the formal, as well as informal street networks. This inaccessibility is highly likely to limit the potential that this system may have to generate development near station located that is fully integrated with the LRT system. Primary data collected by surveying households across the metropolitan area revealed very little difference between car ownership rates and weekly VMT of survey respondents living within 12- mile of an LRT station and elsewhere in the metropolitan area. Differentiating between those station areas that were Park-and-Ride (that is, had a park-and-ride lot) versus Walk-and-Ride showed a more nuanced picture. Residents who live in Walk-and-Ride stations do have have lower VMT than those who live in Park-and-Ride station areas and those who do not live near an LRT station. This reinforces the fact that development needs to be more fully integrated with the LRT system in order to achieve some intended goals such as less dependence on automobiles.
