2013年5月16日，福建省人民政府与东风汽车公司签署了战略合作框架协议，标志着双方合作迈出了实质性的重大步伐。东风汽车公司表示，将以此为契机，进一步优化在东南沿海的事业布局，为福建汽车产业发展提供全方面的支持，推动福建汽车产业发展迈上新的台阶，从而实现合作共赢的目标。这是继2009年11月长安汽车重组中航汽车后、汽车界又一重大战略重组事件；也是自2013年1月工业和信息化部、发改委、财政部等12个部委联合发布《关于加快推进重点行业企业兼并重组的指导意见》以来，汽车产业的首次重大重组联合。
