The objective of the proposed research is the demonstration and development of a novel biomass pyrolysis technology for the production of a stable bio-oil. The approach is to carry out catalytic hydrodeodgenation(HDO) and upgrading together with pyrolysis in a single fluidized bed reactor with a unique two-level design that permits the physical separation of the two processes. The hydrogen required for the HDO will be generated in the catalytic section by the water-gas shift reaction employing recycled CO produced from the pyrolysis reaction itself. Thus, the use of a reactive recycle stream is another innovation in this technology. The catalysts will be designed in collaboration with BASF Catalysts LLC (formerly Engelhard Corporation), a leader in the manufacture of attrition-resistant cracking catalysts. The proposed work will include reactor modeling with state-of-the-art computational fluid dynamics in a supercomputer, and advanced kinetic analysis for optimization of bio-oil production.

A comprehensive process model is developed for high temperature air-steam biomass gasification in a downdraft gasifier using the ASPEN PLUS simulator.The simulation results are compared with the experimental data obtained through pilot scale downdraft gasifier.In this study,the model is used to investigate the effects of gasifying agent preheating,equivalence ratio (ER),and steam/biomass (S/B) on producer gas composition,high heating value (HHV),and cold gas efficiency (CGE).Results indicate that H2 and CO contents have increased when gasifying agent preheating is used,while gasifying agent preheating has no effect with H2 and CO at high ER.At high level of S/B,the concentrations of H2 and CO are related with water-gas shift reaction in significant.HHV and CGE depend on the concentrations of H2 and CO in producer gas,which can increase by preheated gasifying agent.However,gasifying agent preheating should apply with waste heat from the process because there is no additional cost of energy price.

In this project, IAI is developing a software tool called CBAR (Channel Model Tool Based on Bidirectional Analytic Ray Tracing and Radiative Transfer) that offers the benefit of high-fidelity channel characterization accounting for terrain and atmospheric effects, resulting in statistical and deterministic channel models that can be incorporated easily into a wireless network performance simulation tool.

The potential of RFID (radio frequency identification) technology is analyzed in the context of service robots. Various concepts that differ by operation frequency (LF, HF, UHF) and, thus, by range are analyzed. Typically, the service robot application which is to be supported by RFID, preselects the frequency band by range requirements. Within the DESIRE project, RFID was investigated for platform localization in large operation areas as well as for object identification at small distances. To enable this investigation, an electronic system was designed, built and integrated into the DESIRE platform that supports multiple antenna control. Detection zones of objects, equipped with UHF-RFID tags, were estimated under lab conditions and for onboard scenarios. In particular, strengths and weaknesses of UHF-RFID object identification at far distances and in the presence of interfering signals are discussed. This lead to one scenario in which the robot grasps an object, moves and rotates it in reading distance to the antenna mounted at the robot torso. The service robot can thus perceive object information that complements information from other sensor modalities like vision.

 This multi-line telephone was used as a model for a trade study comparison of two interfaces: a touchscreen interface (iPad) versus a pressure-sensitive strain gauge button interface (Phidget USB interface controllers). The experiment and its results are detailed in the authors' AES 133rd convention paper; Multimodal Information Management: Evaluation of Auditory and Haptic Cues for NextGen Communication Dispays;. This Engineering Brief describes how the interface logic, visual indications, and auditory cues of the original telephone were synthesized using MAX/MSP, including the logic for line selection, line hold, and priority line activation.

In this study, the cumulative interference power distribution at low earth orbit from AeroMACS transmitters at the 497 major airports in the contiguous United States was simulated with the Visualyse Professional software. The dependence of the interference power on the number of antenna beams per airport, gain patterns, and beam direction orientations was simulated. As a function of these parameters, the simulation results are presented in terms of the limitations on transmitter power required to maintain the cumulative interference power under the established threshold.

This project supported research activities for making quantum- enhanced communications and metrology practical. The strategy was to develop robust photonic quantum states and sensors serving as an archetype for loss- tolerant information acquisition beyond the standard quantum limit, as well as in finding practical sensing applications outside the laboratory for detecting objects in situations where power-limited illumination is critical.We have also been efficient in investigating fundamental issues of quantum metrology, establishing a general framework for understanding more complex scenarios, such as lossy parameter estimation, and joint measurements of multiple parameters. Investigations have fostered a novel approach which will inform our future researchers: the adoption of sensing networks in which quantum memories act as key devices.

Salient features of the Integrated Network include (a) a central system element that performs service management functions and user mission interfaces for service requests; (b) a set of common service execution equipment deployed at the all stations that provides return, forward, and radiometric data processing and delivery capabilities; (c) the network monitor and control operations for the entire integrated network are conducted remotely and centrally at a prime-shift site and rotating among three sites globally (a follow-the-sun approach); (d) the common network monitor and control software deployed at all three network elements that supports the follow-the-sun operations.

The experiments revealed identical results to those obtained via microgravity processing.This research then led to a patented process for eliminating crystals in optical fiber preforms and the resulting optical fibers. In this paper, the microgravity results will be reviewed as well as patents and papers relating to the use of magnetic fields in various material and glass processing applications. Finally our patent to eliminate crystals in non-oxide glasses utilizing a magnetic field will be detailed.
