    The overall project goal is to reduce the cost of home and neighborhood photovoltaic storage systems by reducing the single largest cost component the energy storage cells. Solar power is accepted as an environmentally advantaged renewable power source. Its deployment in small communities and integrated into the grid, requires a safe, reliable and low cost energy storage system. The incumbent technology of lead acid cells is large, toxic to produce and dispose of, and offer limited life even with significant maintenance. The ideal PV storage battery would have the safety and low cost of lead acid but the performance of lithium ion chemistry. Present lithium ion batteries have the desired performance but cost and safety remain the two key implementation barriers.

    This report investigates strategies to mitigate anticipated wind energy curtailment on Maui, with a focus on grid-level energy storage technology. The study team developed an hourly production cost model of the Maui Electric Company (MECO) system, with an expected 72 MW of wind generation and 15 MW of distributed photovoltaic (PV) generation in 2015, and used this model to investigate strategies that mitigate wind energy curtailment. It was found that storage projects can reduce both wind curtailment and the annual cost of producing power, and can do so in a cost-effective manner. Most of the savings achieved in these scenarios are not from replacing constant-cost diesel-fired generation with wind generation. Instead, the savings are achieved by the more efficient operation of the conventional units of the system. Using additional storage for spinning reserve enables the system to decrease the amount of spinning reserve provided by single-cycle units. This decreases the amount of generation from these units, which are often operated at their least efficient point (at minimum load). At the same time, the amount of spinning reserve from the efficient combined-cycle units also decreases, allowing these units to operate at higher, more efficient levels.

    Detailed understanding of turbulent combustion in liquid rocket engines (LRE) requires an ability to predict the coupling between the transient features, acoustics, vortex/shear layer dynamics and the unsteady combustion heat release. Conventional and ad hoc models that mimic or match one set of conditions but fail in another test case cannot be used for reliable predictions. This paper presents a simulation strategy based on Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) that uses a finite-volume scheme on multi-block, structured grids and solves the full multi-species, compressible LES equations using a hybrid central-upwind scheme to capture both turbulence shear flow and large density gradients. The sensitivity of predictions to the real gas equation of state such as the Peng-Robinson one is addressed in this study. The main modeling challenges concern the simultaneous capture of the flame structure, the flame-turbulence interactions and the regions of compressibility. The current work focuses on turbulent combustion in three single injector configurations for these objectives: (a) trans-critical liquid oxygen (LOX) / gaseous hydrogen (GH2) combustion, (b) trans-critical LOX/methane combustion and (c) high-pressure GOX/methane combustion with thermo-acoustic instabilities. Results will be reported on the flame structure, liquid core length and spreading rate, and comparison with data where appropriate. Finally, for LES of such problems, a more fundamental challenge is to determine the implication of the LES subgrid closures for real gas flame dynamics. As a preliminary effort, the Linear-Eddy sub-grid model (LEM) is being applied to some of these cases.

    Cell imbalance is one of the key factors that limit the capacity and power of battery energy storage systems (BESS),especially the large lithium-ion battery packs.To deal with the unbalancing problem,an effective balancing circuit is required,so is an optimal balancing strategy.In this paper,an optimal strategy for cells balancing has been presented.Contrary to the conventional balancing algorithms which base on instantaneous voltage or state-of-charge (SOC) no matter what the cause of imbalance is,the proposed strategy is targeted to different imbalance situations.Four cases of cell imbalance have been analyzed and the balancing effects of different algorithms are discussed.The simulation results show that the proposed strategy improves the performances of battery packs,including the usable capacity and maximum power.

    Electrolytes, nano-structuring and graphene nanoplatelets for electrodes, and current collectors in batteries and supercapacitors were investigated. The following results were obtained: i) Nano-structuring of graphene nanoplatelets with and without conductive polymers produced supercapacitors with very high specific capacitance (>165 F/gm) and high frequency (>150 Hz) response with low losses; ii) graphene nanoplatelet thin films can replace copper current collectors in energy storage devices and save weight ~80% and reduced cost.

    In the effort to meet climate change targets the share of renewable energy in electricity market has to be increased. The augmented penetration of renewable sources in the electricity grids could be destabilizing and may create barriers to their future expansion. Energy storage technologies are being regarded as a potential solution to deal with the intermittent nature of renewable energy sources. Introduction of energy storage systems in a future Smart Grid is definitely a complex problem and requires the technological analysis of the energy system itself. The purpose of this paper is to present an up-to-date critical examination of the state of the art of different computer tools that can be used to analyse the integration of energy storage systems utilized in conjunction with distributed generation. Particular emphasis is given to the case of isolated Greek islands.
