The increase in road congestion, due to the growing population, and lower emissions from rail transportation, when compared to that of trucks, are leading to the shift of freight transport from roads to railways. For instance, the fuel efficiency of rail transport is three to six times better than that of trucks. The movement of freight through rail produces almost 30%-70% lesser emissions than that of heavy goods vehicle (HGV).
