In mathematical modeling of genetic regulation networks, the classical assumption is that the direction of regulation by a regulator (activation or repression) on a specific target gene is fixed. However experimental studies have suggested that the direction of gene regulation might be concentration-dependent. Earlier modeling work assumed only specific transcription factors behave in this concentration-dependent manner. Nevertheless, based on our in vivo DNA occupancy measurements of transcription factors and target gene mRNA expressions, we propose that concentration-dependent activation or repression might be a more general phenomenon.

Printed batteries are emerging battery technology that has the potential to enable the production of cheap, small form factor, flexible batteries capable of powering a diverse set of existing and emerging applications such as RFID tags, flexible displays, and distributed sensors. Partially printed battery systems have been demonstrated with various chemistries, but what is needed is a low cost, air stable method of fully printing a high energy density batteries. The silver oxide chemistry is attractive for developing a printed battery as this chemistry has demonstrated high energy densities and is capable of air stable fabrication processes due to its aqueous based chemistry. To facilitate the advancement of this technology, material components and printing techniques need to be developed to demonstrate a printed silver oxide battery.

1613.合成生物学两个最优路径问题

We examine two optimal path problems that arise in the context of ranking enzymatic pathways to synthesize a target compound. First, we present a survey of exact and approximation algorithms for the multiobjective shortest path (MOSP) problem. Second, we formalize the problem of fi nding stoichiometrically minimal source pathways (SMSP), which seeks to find paths that use a non-dominated amount of native chemicals to reach a target compound. We show that the SMSP problem is NP-complete and present two approaches to solve it based on model checking. For both problems, we provide an experimental evaluation and discussion of results.

The ocean is home to many exotic ecosystems, a substantial source of the world’s total crude oil, susceptible to military infiltration, and yet still massively undersampled and underexplored. Recently, mobile underwater sensor networks have been gaining traction as a method for monitoring our oceans with better spatial and temporal resolution. In this application, the most viable way of imaging the environment is by using acoustics. This is precluded, however, by a current lack of suitable acoustic transducers.

Our project, Next Generation Memory Interfaces, aims to develop a physical interface for the latest memory standard i.e. DDR4 SDRAM (Double Data Rate 4th generation, Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory). The DDR4 standard allows for memory to be accessed at twice the data rate of its preceding standard, DDR3 while simultaneously reducing the total power consumption and increasing the memory density. As memory devices eternally seek to be faster, denser and extremely low power consuming systems, our interface will get us another step further in this quest.

This dissertation discusses the design and scaling characteristics of Tesla – or so-called “friction” – turbines, and offers design solutions for achieving optimum performance given the input specifications. The research covers turbines ranging from sub-watt power scavenging designs to watt-range mobile applications to kilowatt-range renewable energy applications. The characteristics of the turbine are demonstrated using micro fabrication, theoretical analysis, and ANSYS, COMSOL, and MATLAB simulations. A MATLAB GUI is provided for generating design specifications and turbine performance sensitivity.

Polymer nanocomposite materials containing inorganic fillers such as metallic particles dispersed in a polymer have been the subject of intense research because of their enormous potential as electronic, photonic and energy storage materials. These hybrid materials combine the functionality of nanoparticles with the processability of polymer films. However, in order to achieve optimal performance of the composite material a uniform dispersion of nanoparticles is necessary to fully utilize the properties of nanoparticles. Usually the dispersion of nanoparticles in polymers is challenging and the nanoparticles tend to agglomerate or/and phase separate in the host polymer matrix.

Optical interconnects are increasingly important for our communication and data center systems, and are forecasted to be an essential component of future computers. In order to meet these future demands, optical interconnects must be improved to consume less power than they do today. To do this, both more efficient transmitters and more sensitive receivers must be developed. This work addresses the latter, focusing on device level improvements to tightly couple a low capacitance photodiode with the first stage transistor of the receiver as a single phototransistor device.

Advances in algorithms and coding have made the convergence time of a convex optimization problem reasonable for real-time optimization applications. However, solving convex optimization problems within a microsecond is still challenging, especially for larger sized problems. In addition, due to Moore's Law slowing down, the speed of modern processors is not improving at a signifi cant rate. Many applications use parallelization in an e ort to continue solving problems faster. However, this method is not e ffective for all convex optimization problems as it may require iterations to reach a solution, e ffectively increasing latency.
