For diverse applications in optical, electronic and consumer industries, the use of glass and glass ceramics as substrates for functional coatings is becoming of outstanding interest in order to develop advanced composites. Atmospheric Plasma Spraying (APS) is an adequate technology for the deposition of a wide variety of materials on glasses. Glass and glass ceramics are characterised by their specific thermo physical properties like low or even negative CTE, low heat conductivity and high dimensional stability. Consequently, modified production processes in comparison to the established coating operations on metal surfaces are required regarding the substrate activation methods or a more accurate heat transfer guidance to the substrate by optimized robot trajectories. This paper aims to give an overview of the investigations carried out at the IMTCCC for the development of plasma sprayed layer composites on borosilicate glass and glass ceramic substrates.

Distributed photovoltaic (PV) projects must go through an interconnection study process before connecting to the distribution grid. These studies are intended to identify the likely impacts and mitigation alternatives. In the majority of the cases, system impacts can be ruled out or mitigation can be identified without an involved study, through a screening process or a simple supplemental review study. For some proposed projects, expensive and time-consuming interconnection studies are required. The challenges to performing the studies are twofold. First, every study scenario is potentially unique, as the studies are often highly specific to the amount of PV generation capacity that varies greatly from feeder to feeder and is often unevenly distributed along the same feeder. This can cause location-specific impacts and mitigations. The second challenge is the inherent variability in PV power output which can interact with feeder operation in complex ways, by affecting the operation of voltage regulation and protection devices. The typical simulation tools and methods in use today for distribution system planning are often not adequate to accurately assess these potential impacts. This report demonstrates how quasi-static time series (QSTS) simulation and high time-resolution data can be used to assess the potential impacts in a more comprehensive manner. The QSTS simulations are applied to a set of sample feeders with high PV deployment to illustrate the usefulness of the approach. The report describes methods that can help determine how PV affects distribution system operations. The simulation results are focused on enhancing the understanding of the underlying technical issues. The examples also highlight the steps needed to perform QSTS simulation and describe the data needed to drive the simulations. The goal of this report is to make the methodology of time series power flow analysis readily accessible to utilities and others responsible for evaluating potential PV impacts.

Aims to address the restrictions imposed by tranditional robot Control system development approach such as close structure,function immobility,lack of reconfiguration at run time,hard to guarantee.a lightweight service-oriented architectures(LSOA) for robot control system is proposed.The main features of this architecture include central control mode,message-based interaction and configuration system based on embedded database.This architecture provides good supports for runtime reconfiguration,and allows integrating different components with the aid of a configuration system.The experiment indicates that the LSOA approach can improve the flexibility,reconfiguration and agility of the system.

Previous work quantifying the non-hardware balance-of-system costs--or soft costs--associated with building a residential or commercial photovoltaic (PV) system has left a significant portion unsegmented in an other soft costs category. This report attempts to better quantify the other soft costs by focusing on the financing, overhead, and profit of residential and commercial PV installations for a specific business model. There are many different business models in the PV marketplace, with varying cost structures; however, a common model was chosen to gain better insight of typical costs within the currently unsegmented other soft costs category. This report presents results from a bottom-up data-collection and analysis of the upfront costs associated with developing, constructing, and arranging third-party-financed residential and commercial PV systems. It quantifies the indirect corporate costs required to install distributed PV systems as well as the transactional costs associated with arranging third-party financing. It accompanies the recent National Renewable Energy Laboratory soft cost benchmarking report (Friedman et al. 2013), which quantifies all the non-hardware balance-of-system costs associated with building a residential or commercial PV system.

The Glove-Enabled Computer Operations (GECO) system enables an extravehicular activity (EVA) glove to be dual-purposed as a human-computer interface device. This paper describes the design and human participant testing of a right-handed GECO glove in a pressurized glove box. As part of an investigation into the usability of the GECO system for EVA data entry, twenty participants were asked to complete activities including (1) a Simon Says Games in which they attempted to duplicate random sequences of targeted finger strikes and (2) a Text Entry activity in which they used the GECO glove to enter target phrases in two different virtual keyboard modes. In a within-subjects design, both activities were performed both with and without vibrotactile feedback. Participants mean accuracies in correctly generating finger strikes with the pressurized glove were surprisingly high, both with and without the benefit of tactile feedback. Five of the subjects achieved mean accuracies exceeding 99 in both conditions. In Text Entry, tactile feedback provided a statistically significant performance benefit, quantified by characters entered per minute, as well as reduction in error rate. Secondary analyses of responses to a NASA Task Loader Index (TLX) subjective workload assessments reveal a benefit for tactile feedback in GECO glove use for data entry. This first-ever investigation of employment of a pressurized EVA glove for human-computer interface opens up a wide range of future applications, including text chat communications, manipulation of procedureschecklists, cataloguingannotating images, scientific note taking, human-robot interaction, and control of suit andor other EVA systems.

Technical concerns with integrating higher penetrations of photovoltaic (PV) systems include grid stability, voltage regulation, power quality (voltage rise, sags, flicker, and frequency fluctuations), and protection and coordination. The current utility grid was designed to accommodate power flows from the central generation source to the transmission system and eventually to the distribution feeders. At the distribution level, the system was designed to carry power from the substation toward the load. Renewable distributed generation, particularly solar PV, provides power at the distribution level challenging this classical paradigm. As these resources become more commonplace the nature of the distribution network and its operation is changing to handle power flow in both directions. A large portion of distribution system components, including voltage regulators and protection systems, were not designed to coordinate with bidirectional power flow and bidirectional fault currents from distributed generation and PV systems in particular. Coordinating these devices in the presence of high penetration PV areas introduces additional challenges to feasibility and system impact studies. Some cases require modification of existing protection schemes, additional distribution equipment, or reactive power requirements on the PV inverters. This report is focused on large PV installations in which penetration is significantly greater than 15of maximum daytime feeder load. To date the impact on the electric utility and its customers has not been problematic in any of these cases. The PV system installations described in this report exceeds what most experts consider high penetration scenarios. The voltage, power quality, and other operating parameters have been maintained within the required ranges with minimal negative impact on distribution operations and utility customers. These case studies are intended to demonstrate success stories with integration of large PV plants at the distribution level as well as some of the solutions used by the utility to ensure safe, reliable operation of both the PV system and the distribution network.

The U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) SunShot Vision Study (DOE 2012) explored the impact of reducing solar prices by about 75from 2010 to 2020 on the potential deployment of solar technologies in the United States. DOE's SunShot Initiative envisions reaching a $1.50/W installed system price for residential rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems by 2020 and a $1.25/W installed price for commercial rooftop PV systems by 2020. The SolarDS model was used to simulate rooftop PV market demand based on these price projections, along with several market assumptions, including customer access to financing, future retail electricity rates, and net-metering policies. In the SunShot Vision Study, U.S. rooftop PV demand increased from about 1 GW in 2010 to 121 GW by 2030 and 240 GW by 2050.

Background: Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is considered a major public health problem in the U.S. because it has fairly high prevalence and because people with PTSD often have problems with their work, relationships, and health. There are effective treatments for PTSD, such as prolonged exposure therapy (which works by inviting people to revisit their memories of traumatic events and to face objectively safe situations they have avoided). However, individuals with PTSD may not get the treatment they need because they live in rural locations with no trained clinicians or because they have transportation problems (for example, the distance makes frequent travel unfeasible or they cannot afford gas). Some individuals with PTSD do not feel comfortable driving (due to fears of roadside bombs) or they may feel uncomfortable in formal hospitals or other crowded places. One new method of giving treatments is by using interactive video equipment (called 'telemedicine'), so that the patient and his therapist can talk with each other and see each other over a monitor. Objectives/Rationale: The goal of the study is to compare exposure therapy in a usual format (face-to-face, in-person therapy) to the therapy in a telemedicine format. This project will help determine whether telemedicine can be used to provide needed therapies to veterans with PTSD in remote locations. Study Design: 210 military veterans with PTSD will receive exposure therapy either by telemedicine or in-person care. Progress: To date, 195 veterans have been enrolled in the study. PTSD symptoms and cognitive functioning are measured before treatment begins, at the completion of therapy, and at a 6 month follow- up assessment. At the end of therapy veterans and therapists are asked how satisfied they were with each type of treatment.
