    Information disclosure is the process of transactions for delivering or revealing information from one party to other parties. The transaction happens between two ends, the first being the disclosing party, usually considered the owner of the information (or owner of the rights of the information). The second end of the transaction is the receiving party. In many cases, the receiving party of the transaction may include entities that are untrusted by the disclosing party (adversaries). In many cases, there is asymmetry in the knowledge between the intended recipient of the information and the adversarial entities, where the intended recipient of the information has more certain knowledge than the adversary about the sender of the information. This asymmetry can be exploited by the disclosing party to protect its privacy. In this report we present a framework of information disclosure under the assumption that adversaries exist in the receiving party such that asymmetry in knowledge between the intended recipient and the adversarial entities exist giving advantage to the intended recipient. We propose a way to disclose the information such that it can have as little utility as possible to these adversarial entities in a classification and inference settings.

    This research develops computational models of teaching and learning and combines these models with machine learning algorithms to interpret learners’ actions and customize instruction based on these interpretations. This approach results in frameworks that can be adapted to a variety of educational domains, with the frameworks clearly separating components that can be shared across tasks and components that are customized based on the educational content. Using this approach, this dissertation addresses three major questions: (1) How can one diagnose learners’ knowledge from their behavior in games and virtual laboratories? (2) How can one predict whether a game will be diagnostic of learners’ knowledge? and (3) How can one customize instruction in a computer-based tutor based on a model of learning in a domain?

    This paper studies conditions where messages endlessly circulate in a system of IEEE 1588-2008 clocks. The study is based on two independent analysis techniques. One uses a discrete event simulation environment for describing the operation of the best master clock (BMC) algorithm in IEEE 1588-2008. The second uses a model checking tool. We discuss several cases illustrating conditions under which circulating messages occur and the effectiveness of measures to squelch these messages. This paper demonstrates that one or more of the squelching mechanisms must be implemented.

    We study a corpus of 100 years of newspaper articles to see if we can find evidence to support the popular intuition that as news cycles have sped up, the public's attention span has gotten shorter. We find no such evidence: to the contrary, we find that the typical length of time that a person's name stays in the news has not changed over time, and celebrities now stay in the news for longer than ever before. We also investigate a new kind of community on Twitter called a group chat, where members have regular meetings to discuss a broad range of topics, from medical conditions to hobbies. We find that the phenomenon is growing over time, and paint a broad picture of the topics which one could find a group chat to discuss. With a view to helping connect new participants to group chats they may not have been able to find or might not have been aware of, we design an algorithm to rank group chats in the context of a topic given as a query.

    Ever since the invention of the transistor, aggressive channel length scaling has been pursued to achieve higher performance and greater packing density. In order to preserve gate control at short channel lengths, the transistor channel has evolved from bulk to low dimensional substrates, such as 2D thin films and 1D nanowires. For scaling to continue, it is vital that we understand the processing and physics of low dimensional materials.Chapter 2 focuses on quasi-2D ultrathin body InAsSb-on-insulator n-FETs. 1D InAs nanowire (NW) n-FETs are explored in chapter 3.Chapter 4 explores 2D transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) thin films. In chapter 5 we present heterojunction diodes formed by thin films of InAs and WSe2.

    We explored opportunities for new transportation solutions in these large communities by evaluating existing solutions, interviewing potential users, and analyzing interview and survey data from residents in a specific community. We found that there is an unmet need for a shared transportation solution in a large MPC and designed and implemented a mobile application to demonstrate such a solution.

    This dissertation explores several new approaches to developing quantum algorithms. These approaches include span programs, electrical flows and nonsparse Hamiltonian simulation. We demonstrate their power by successfully applying them to some useful problems, including tree detection, effective resistance estimation and curve fitting. All of these algorithms are time-efficient,and some of them are proven to be (nearly) optimal.

    In this project, we incorporated augmented reality into indoor positioning and designed a novel user interface with a compelling application that delivers an interactive indoor navigation experience through augmented graphical views aligned with indoor objects. It is demonstrated in the CITRIS Invention Lab at Berkeley and works by providing augmented navigation,interactive device instructions, demo products display and device reservation look up for lab visitors and apprentices. It runs on the Android mobile platform powered by OpenGL graphics, orientation sensors and an indoor position simulator. The user study shows that 80%of users prefer our augmented reality based user interface.

    This paper presents a sensor system to detect motor defects on drones to overcome this deficiency. The feasibility of installing micro-electromechanical (MEMS) accelerometers on drones to inspect the vibration characteristics of a drone is investigated. Accelerometers were installed near the drone motors to collect vibration data and a Fourier Fast Transform (FFT) was used to analyze the data. An empirical method of observing the vibration spectrum of an Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) airframe was demonstrated by adopting motor vibration measurement methods. A baseline condition for what constitutes proper operation was first made. Airframes that were intentionally damaged showed significant differences in vibration spectrum, demonstrating that a cheap and feasible failure prediction and detection warning system can be applied to small scale UAS.
