Wireless sensor network with lightweight and efficient communication infrastructures are today a great interest, both at research and industrial level, as they are the basis for reliable monitoring services. Mesh networks are ideal candidates in this scenario, as they can be very fault-tolerant. After introducing wireless network systems requirements, we show the design of a mesh network routing protocol based on AODV schemas. Its implementation runs on top of low-cost off-the-shelf components, and allowed us to build a custom power meter wireless sensor node.

The field study, Phase 1 of this research, resulted in a set of best practices appropriate to the current labor pool and market conditions in central Florida to achieve projected annual energy savings of 15-30% and higher. This report describes Phase 2 of the work where researchers worked with a local government partner to implement and refine the 'current best practices.' A simulation study was conducted to characterize savings potential under three sets of conditions representing varying replacement needs for energy-related equipment and envelope components. The three scenarios apply readily to the general remodeling industry as for renovation of foreclosed homes for the affordable housing market. Our new local government partner, the City of Melbourne, implemented the best practices in a community-scale renovation program that included ten homes in 2012.

In numerous applications of wireless sensor networks, the reliability of the data collected by sensors is cast as specific QoS requirements expressed in terms of the minimum number of sensors needed to perform various tasks. Designing a long-lived sensor network with reliable performance has always been challenging due to the modest non-renewable energy budget of individual sensors. In order to promote network longevity, this chapter looks at two energy-aware task management protocols: the first protocol is centralized, while the second one is fully distributed. Both protocols assign sensors to tasks based on their remaining energy so that energy expenditure among neighboring sensors is as even as possible. We compare the network longevity, i.e., the functional lifetime of the sensor network, achieved by assigning tasks to sensors using the proposed protocols against an optimal task assignment and also against energy-oblivious protocols. Extensive simulation results have revealed that the performance of the proposed protocols is very close to that of the optimal task assignment. Furthermore, our simulations have shown that the proposed protocols can increase the functional longevity of the network by about 16%.

The existing parallel type pressurized water supply pipeline of high-rise buildings has been improved to build energy-saving high-rise building water supply systems.Series-parallel combined constant pressure water supply pipeline is designed.Antipollution high water tank is reasonably installed above the middle area of the building to supply water for the middle area high water tank and supply pressurized water by water pumps for high-rise district.And PLC control system is designed to control the work efficiency of the water pumps according to the sensor feedback information.Verified by calculation and simulation,series-parallel combined constant pressure water supply pipeline is better than parallel water supply pipes in saving the energy which is about the middle-Hybrid phase consumption of the latter.PLC control is simulated and the results show that PLC can effectively control the water supply system to ensure stable water pressure so as to save energy.

Communication is the action of transmitting and eventually receiving another message in response, as in an exchange of e-mails, for example. In a technical approach, one may say that communication is the process that involves the transmission and reception of messages between a source and an addressee receiver, in which information transmitted through physical resources or equipment, and technological devices are coded at source and decrypted at the destination using agreed systems of signs or sound symbols, written or iconographic. Schematically (Figure 15.1), there are five elements in any communication system, namely, an emitter, an encoder, a transmission channel, a decoder, and a receiver. The encoder handles the message, so it passes through the channel, and the decoder carries out the reverse process. In order to be practical and safe, the construction of a communication system may rennire other comnonents.

Designing the decision-making engine of a robot which works in a collaborative team is a challenging task. This is not only due to the complexity of the environment uncertainty, dynamism and imprecision, but also because of the coordination of the team has to be included in this design. The robots must be aware of other robots' actions in order to cooperate and to successfully achieve their common goal. In addition, decisions must be made in real-time and using limited computational resources. In this chapter we propose some novel algorithms for action selection in ambiguous tasks where the communication opportunities among the robots are very limited.

This report documents the development of part-load performance curves and there use with the EnergyPlus simulation tool to estimate the potential savings from the use of Rebel units compared to other standard options. The conventional direct-expansion cooling model in EnergyPlus and its performance curve equations are not appropriate to use to capture the Rebels performance; therefore, performance curves suitable for the Rebel unit were developed. The data for the performance curves were collected through a series of laboratory tests. A detailed Energy Plus model was developed for a prototypical big-box retail store. The model used the new performance curves along with detailed energy management control code to estimate the energy consumption of the prototypical big-box retail store in three locations (Houston, Log Angeles and Chicago). The energy consumption by the big-box store was then compared to a store that used three different reference units.

Nature-inspired models present several attractive features such as self-organization and emergence, good scalability, adaptation, and resilience to changes in the environment. This survey showed that these attributes can bring great benefits to design and implementation of self-organized, large-scale WSNs. Self-organized mechanisms alleviate the dependence of sensors on a central controller and therefore help sensors to consume energy more efficiently in reaching the primary goal of WSNs to prolong their lifetime. Furthermore, because of the inherent limitations/characteristics of natural systems, nature-inspired models usually reach their expected performance level more slowly than conventional control-based systems. Here, interactions among entities within a system may also remain subtle, and more precise characterization is required to describe them. Therefore, better understanding of specific functions of natural systems is required to design and implement appropriate nature-inspired models. In fact, simple mimicking of biological functions is not enough in many cases.

Mobility management is a crucial problem for wireless mobile communication, especially in wireless sensor networks (WSN). In this chapter, we show the need of providing an intelligent mobility controller, applicable to any WSN industrial environment or testbed setting with mobility requirements. In particular, we utilize fuzzy logic control, due to its reported strength in controlling nonlinear systems using linguistic information, to build an efficient mobility controller that aid sensor mobile entities to decide whether they have to trigger the handoff procedure and perform the handoff to a new connection position or not. Based on real industrial setting experiments, the fuzzy logic-based mobility controller has shown significant benefits compared to the RSSI-based conventional mobility solution, fulfilling basic performance requirements.

The current practice for evaluating the payback period for a GSHP application can be time consuming and expensive owing to the large number of inputs required by simulations and the complexity of the simulations. It is highly desirable to have a tool that can estimate the payback period with reasonable accuracy but minimal expenditure of both time and money. An approach to simplifying the evaluation effort is to identify the key parameters that most significantly affect the payback period of GSHP applications. Through a comprehensive parametric study, key parameters are identified that, within a typical range of variations, can make more than a 30% difference in the payback period for implementing a typical GSHP system in typical medium-size office buildings.
