This chapter introduces the Internet of Intelligent Things (IoIT), the future Internet of Things (IoT) with significant intelligence added to "things". We discuss the importance of Artificial Intelligence approaches to enable such Intelligent Communication Networks. Nowadays, sensor networks are becoming a reality, especially for remote monitoring of events in fields such as healthcare, military, forest integrity or prediction of seismic activity in volcanoes. Intelligent devices and sensors are also appearing, besides electronic home appliances and utilities, as gadgets to mobile phones or tablets. And some of these devices have capability to actuate on the world. This chapter is focused on surveying current approaches for the Internet of all these intelligent things connected and communicating. It addresses artificial intelligence techniques employed to create such intelligence, and network solutions to exploit the benefits brought by this capability.

This project focused on the use of home energy ratings as a tool to promote energy retrofits in existing homes. A home energy rating provides a quantitative appraisal of a home's asset performance, usually compared to a benchmark such as the average energy use of similar homes in the same region. Home rating systems can help motivate homeowners in several ways. Ratings can clearly communicate a home's achievable energy efficiency potential, provide a quantitative assessment of energy savings after retrofits are completed, and show homeowners how they rate compared to their neighbors, thus creating an incentive to conform to a more >social standard. An important consideration is how rating tools for the retrofit market will integrate with existing home energy service programs. For residential programs that target energy savings only, home visits should be focused on key efficiency measures for that home. In order to gain wide adoption, a rating tool must be easily integrated into the field process, demonstrate consistency and reasonable accuracy to earn the trust of home energy technicians, and have a low monetary cost and time hurdle for homeowners. Along with the Home Energy Score, this project also evaluated the energy modeling performance of SIMPLE and REM/Rate.

Multipath propagation and amplitude damping are unavoidable physical phenomena in wireless communication systems. The first causes intersymbol interference in the information signal leading to problems in the decoding of information at the receiver end. The second signifies loss of communication at receiver end. In this work, we present numerical evidences that the multi-path propagation and amplitude damping do not alter the largest positive Lyapunov exponent of some chaotic discrete maps. We also discuss results of simulations illustrating how one could use this property to create a chaos-based communication system that is robust to multi-path propagation and amplitude damping.

On the premise of utilizing and coordinating capacity of steelmaking and rolling,the mathematical model of integrated batch planning can create integrated batch planning to combine steelmaking-casting-rolling closely according to each process constraint conditions and optimization objective.Furthermore,another mathematical model of job scheduling based on heat process model is proposed to not only guarantee the logistics balance between continuous casting and hot rolling,but also acquire the highest ratio of DHCR and lowest energy consumption.

Digital communication is the foundation of modern telecommunications. Basically, it is, an evolution of analog communication that explores the advantages of the information in a digital format. For this reason, differently from analog communication systems, digital systems have to identify, at the receiver, only a finite number of possible transmit waveforms from the received signal and, consequently, they are much more powerful than any analog system.

As information and communication technologies advance, large amounts of data are created everyday. The demands for processing such big data are also increasing. To meet them, the MapReduce framework has been proposed and is now widely used. On the other hand, a rule-based system is used to implement such an intelligent system as an expert system. For applying a rule-based system to process large amounts of data, we propose a method that implements a rule system based on the MapReduce framework. We constructed a simple rule system using Hadoop, which is an open source implementation of the MapReduce framework, and compared several methods of executing a rule system. Our experimental results indicate the potential of a rule system implemented using the MapReduce framework.

This work studies cooperative MPC for Networked Control Systems with multiple wireless nodes. Communication between nodes is affected by random packet dropouts. An algorithm is presented to decide at each time instant which nodes will calculate the control input and which will only relay data. The nodes chosen to calculate the control values solve a cooperative MPC by communicating with their neighbors. This algorithm makes the control architecture flexible by adapting it to the possible changes in the network conditions.

This report summarizes commissioning, short-term testing, utility bill data analysis, and results of on-site monitoring with a focus on the three-bedroom base scope and DER units. Findings from the implementation, commissioning, and short-term testing include air infiltration reductions of greater than 60% in the DER building; a hybrid heat pump system with a savings to investment ratio > 1 (relative to a high efficiency furnace) which also provides the resident with added incentive for energy savings; and duct leakage reductions of > 60% using an aerosolized duct sealing approach.

Conventional communication waveforms are composed of a small set of basis functions that are superposed to represent a stream of bits. Optimal detection of such signals in the presence of noise is achieved by a matched filter, i.e., a linear filter whose impulse response is the time-reverse of the basis function. In contrast, signals from well-known chaotic systems cannot be represented as a superposition of a small number of basis functions. Thus, no simple linear filter produces optimal detection through noise. Recently, a new family of hybrid chaotic systems has been identified whose solutions can be written in terms of basis functions. Since matched filtering can be applied to signals from these systems, their discovery suggests that chaotic waveforms may be suitable for carrying information in a practical communication technology. In this chapter, we first review the definition and significance of the matched filter in order to clarify the sense in which it is optimal. Next, we examine two hybrid chaotic systems in detail, and show how simple matched niters can be defined for their oscillations. Finally, we describe an experimental implementation of an electronic chaotic oscillator and its matched filter.

Automotive applications can be described as distributed embedded software which perform real-time computation on top of a heterogeneous hardware platform. One key phase in designing distributed software systems is software deployment. Therein it is decided how software components are deployed over the hardware platform, and how the communication between software components is performed. These decisions significantly determine the system performance. This chapter tackles the software deployment problem, tailored to the needs of the automotive domain. Thereby, the focus is on two issues: the configuration of the communication infrastructure and how to handle design constraints. It is shown, how state-of-the-art approaches have to be extended in order to tackle these issues, and how the overall process can be performed efficiently, by utilizing search methodologies.
