    Delivering electrical power to remote military bases can be an expensive and dangerous task. The idea of delivering renewable power to remote military bases through space-based solar power has existed for many years, but has not yet materialized. This research sought to examine existing studies and leverage their findings to determine a systems architecture and subsequent design alternatives that could deliver space-based solar power to a military base in Afghanistan. Three design alternatives were created and were based on the defined systems architecture. The system attributes vary by design alternative, to include transmitter size, rectenna size, power transmitted, mass of components, and number of launches required. The design attributes were weighted accordingly to stakeholder objectives. In turn, the entire design alternative was given a Measure of Effectiveness score. This score was used to determine the most effective design alternative among the designs presented in this research. The result is one of the three designs conclusively meets stakeholder requirements and is more effective than the others, yet further research should be done to improve the design and address other concerns, such as the extremely high cost of the system and the potential environmental and safety issues of the high-power microwave beam.

    A power quality analysis method based on electromechanical-electromagnetic hybrid simulation is proposed.The hybrid simulation for power quality analysis can not only enhance the simulation accuracy,and can realize power quality simulation of large scale power system.Then power quality simulation and assessment system is developed based on ADPSS.The system provides plenty of power quality models and achieves power quality simulation based on electromechanical-electromagnetic hybrid simulation.It will provide guidance and reference for power quality study.The hybrid simulation model of an actual large scale power system is built and voltage sag problems caused by short circuit tests are simulated based on the developed system.Simulation result shows the practicality and effectiveness of power quality simulation and assessment system.

    The feasibility of two-stage Space-Based Solar Power to Tethered Aerostat to Earth (SSP-TA) system architectures that offer significant advantages over conventional single stage space-to-earth architectures is being studied. There have been many proposals for the transmission of solar power collected in space to the surface of the earth so that solar energy could provide a major part of the electric power requirements on earth. There are, however, serious difficulties in implementing the single stage space-based solar power systems that have been previously studied. These difficulties arise due to: (i) the cost of transporting the components needed for the extremely large microwave transmit beaming aperture into space orbit, (ii) the even larger collection apertures required on earth, (iii) the potential radiation hazard to personnel and equipment on earth, and iv) a lack of flexibility in location of the collection station on the earth. Two candidate system architectures are described here to overcome these difficulties. In both cases a two-stage space to tethered aerostat to earth transmission system (SSP-TA) is proposed. The use of high altitude tethered aerostats (or powered airships) avoids the effects of attenuation of EM energy propagating through the earth s lower atmosphere. This allows the use of beaming frequencies to be chosen from the range of high millimeter (THz) to near-infrared (NIR) to the visible. This has the potential for: (i) greatly reduced transportation costs to space, (ii) much smaller receiver collection apertures and ground stations, (iii) elimination of the potential radiation hazard to personnel and equipment on earth, and iv) ease in transportation and flexibility in location of the collection station on the earth. A preliminary comparison of system performance and efficiencies is presented.

    Integrating large-scale renewable energy sources and electric vehicles into the power grid, Smart Charging and Vehicle-to-Grid of the electric vehicles play an important role for supply and demand matching in the power grid. The integrated control schemes considering the vehicle user's convenience, battery condition during the idle time, and grid-friendly contribution, have been designed. It is also important to implement the control schemes into the commercial electric vehicle and its supply equipment. This paper describes a laboratory test system of Smart Grid and E-Mobility consisted by an electric vehicle battery test bed, a bi-directional controllable charger, an interface controller with flexibility in communication and control, and a real-time digital simulator. Communication and control functions of each component are confirmed through fundamental experiments, and the load frequency control schemes are implemented to the system.

    Wind power is an important type of renewable energy sources.In this passage we will apply Life Cycle Assessment to analyze the four stages of wind power generation, which are production of raw materials, transportation, build-operate process of wind plants and demolition stages, calculate the energy consumption and the environmental impact, set a contrastive analysis between coal-fired power plants and wind power plants.We will take WangHaiSi Wind Plant in Faku, Shenyang as an example to show the difference between the two ways of getting power.The analysis shows that: in comparison with coal-fired generation, wind power generation saves more energy and reduces emissions of pollutants markedly; the main energy consumption comes from production of raw materials, which takes 79.3% of the total energy consumption throughout the life cycle.In the meantime, the large amount of ecological resources consumption from construction, operation and maintenance of wind plants leads to mass emission of carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide, which respectively take 67.3% and 96.6% of total emissions.Besides, wind generation only accounts for 0.93%, 0.89% and 2.72% of energy consumption, global warming potential (GWP) and acid potential (AP) of coal-fired power generation.Thus, it proved that wind power generation has lesser impacts on environment than coal-fired power generation.However, it is still of great necessity to strengthen the environmental protection measures to reduce the consumption and destroy of ecologic resources.

    Electricity consumer demand response and load control are playing an increasingly important role in the development of a smart grid. Smart grid load management technologies such as Grid Friendly? controls and real-time pricing are making their way into the conventional model of grid planning and operations. However, the behavior of load both affects, and is affected by load control strategies that are designed to support electric grid planning and operations. This chapter discussed the natural behavior of electric loads, how it interacts with various load control and demand response strategies, what the consequences are for new grid operation concepts and the computing issues these new technologies raise.

    Given BOEMs authority under the Energy Policy Act of 2005 (EPAct), and the various considerations under the OCS Lands Act and NEPA, BOEM needs to garner a better understanding of the potential impacts to the environment from the development of offshore renewable energy projects, and to identify specific mitigation measures that can be taken to reduce or avoid such impacts. The ESS Project Team, comprised of ESS Group, Inc. (ESS), GL Garrad Hassan America Inc. (GL GH), Curry and Kerlinger LLC (C&K), and Mote Marine Laboratory (MML), was selected to conduct a review of regulations and lighting schemes currently in use and evaluate how proposed lighting schemes for offshore wind facilities may impact local environments and offshore waters as a desktop study, literature review and synthesis. The study was conducted in three parts: 1. a literature review of scientific studies, journals and grey literature of the potential direct and indirect impacts of various lighting schemes to birds, bats, marine mammals, sea turtles and fish was conducted; 2. a compilation of current international and domestic guidelines, rules and regulations for obstruction and navigation lights for offshore wind facilities was conducted, and project specific information was gathered from operational offshore wind facilities throughout the world describing various lighting schemes currently in use; and 3. using information from the literature review and project specific lighting schemes, measures to mitigate impacts to wildlife and coastal communities were identified and evaluated.

    Power Line Communication (PLC) systems provide a bi-directional communication platform capable of delivering data for a variety of Smart Grid applications such as home energy management and intelligent meter reading and control. One benefit of applying power line communication on power grid is that it provides an infrastructure that is much more comprehensive and widespread than other wired/wireless alternatives. Power line cables are a shared medium, therefore multiple PLC devices operate on the same frequency over the same power line may interfere with each other, thus reducing the effectiveness of these devices. This publication introduces the coexistence mechanism for the IEEE and ITU-T BB-PLC standards, and provides implementation guidelines for PLC devices to be used for smart grid applications.
