Operating a rural network in the developing world means coping with unpredictability, low profit margins, and resource constraints; the increased flexibility and simplified management that software-defined networks provide are a major benefit in this context.

We also built a web application dedicated to diabetic reviewed restaurants, presented here as a way to bring this technology to market.

The ever increasing need for regional and global roaming together with continuous advances in wireless communication standards continue to push future transceivers towards an ability to support multi-mode operation with minimal increases in cost, hardware complexity, and power consumption. RF channel-select filter banks pose a particularly attractive method for achieving multiband reconfigurability, since they not only provide the needed front-end reconfigurability, but also allow for power efficient and versatile transceiver designs, e.g., software-defined radio. Such channel-select filters, however, impose requirements on their constituent resonators that are not yet achievable on the micro-scale. Specifically, capacitively-transduced micromechanical resonators achieve highQ, but suffer from high impedance; while piezoelectric micromechanical resonators offer low impedance, but with insufficientQ. This dissertation demonstrates four new techniques to address the issues in both technologies.

We examine in detail the impact of passivating ligands (i.e., amines, phosphines, phosphine oxides and pyridines) on the electronic and optical spectra of Cd(sub 33)Se(sub 33) quantum dots (QDs) using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) quantum-chemical methodologies. Most ligand orbitals are found deep inside in the valence and conduction bands of the QD, with pyridine being an exception by introducing new states close to the conduction band edge. Importantly, all ligands contribute states which are highly delocalized over both the QD surface and ligands, forming hybridized orbitals rather than ligand-localized trap states. In contrast, the states close to the band gap are delocalized over the QD atoms only and define the lower energy absorption spectra. The random detachment of one of ligands from the QD surface results in the appearance of a highly localized unoccupied state inside the energy gap of the QD. Such changes in the electronic structure are correlated with the respective QD-ligand binding energy and steric ligand-ligand interactions. Polar solvent significantly reduces both effects leading to delocalization and stabilization of the surface states. Thus, trap and surface states are substantially eliminated by the solvent. Polar solvent also blue-shifts (e.g., 0.3-0.4 eV in acetonitrile) the calculated absorption spectra. This shift increases with an increase of the dielectric constant of the solvent. We also found that the approximate single-particle Kohn-Sham (KS) approach is adequate for calculating the absorption spectra of the ligated QDs. Besides a systematic blue-shift, the KS spectra are in very good agreement with their respective counterparts calculated with the more accurate TDDFT method.

We have investigated for the first time the electrical properties of metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) photodectors fabricated using black silicon- germanium on silicon substrate (Si1-xGex/Si) for I-V, optical response, external quantum efficiency (EQE), internal quantum efficiency (IQE), and responsivity and reflectivity. Silicon-germanium (Si1-xGex)/Si with variations of Ge were blackened by metal enhanced chemical etching (MECE) using nanometer- scale gold particles as catalyst and HF:H2O2:CH3COOH solution as etchant. The etched surface was black, textured, and showed strong suppression of reflectivity. These properties are consistent with Si1-xGex becoming highly micro-structured due to metal catalysis and wet etching. Using the blackened SiGe/Si, MSM photodiodes were fabricated and tested. The lowering of reflection using a U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL)-developed technique has helped the enhancement of absorption in Si1-xGex to provide increased optical response, which is an important milestone towards practical, extended wavelength (approximately 2 microns) electro-optical applications.

Electronics designed for use in NASA space missions are required to work efficiently and reliably under harsh environment conditions. These Include radiation, extreme temperatures, thermal cycling, to name a few. Preliminary data obtained on new Gallium Nitride and Silicon Carbide power devices under exposure to radiation followed by long term thermal cycling are presented. This work was done in collaboration with GSFC and JPL in support of the NASA Electronic Parts and Packaging (NEPP) Program.

Bulk magnetoresistance quantum oscillations are observed in high quality single crystal samples of BiTeI. This compound shows an extremely large internal spin-orbit coupling, associated with the polarity of the alternating Bi, Te, and I layers perpendicular to the c-axis. The corresponding areas of the inner and outer Fermi surfaces around the A-point show good agreement with theoretical calculations, demonstrating that the intrinsic bulk Rashba-type splitting is nearly 360 meV, comparable to the largest spin-orbit coupling generated in heterostructures and at surfaces.

This paper focuses on the design and implementation of one of the applications for HydraScope. The wall search application enables users to have a big picture of the search results and automatically open the links for users. A user study with ten participants reveals that the searching becomes more efficient by using HydraScope’s search application.

The Dr. Chi capstone project team created the mobile application Dr. Chi. This application contains a program on the iOS platform and a sensor gadget which implements pulse reading as in Chinese medicine. Through measuring, storing and analyzing the heart pulse data, this application can give users instructive suggestions on stress management. We selected and optimized the sensor component for the sensor gadget by studying numbers of different kinds of sensors to improve the sensor precision.
