This report covers work done for the Director's Research Initiative (DSI) on Gallium Nitride (GaN) High Power Electronics (HPE) in which GaN devices are assessed in comparison to those fabricated from silicon carbide (SiC). We show that for low power applications (less than 1500 V) GaN diodes should have a lower on-resistance, and therefore less loss, than their SiC counterparts because the critical breakdown field and electron mobility are larger. We expect this will also be true for HPE GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs) compared to SiC metal-oxide-semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs). Although a few GaN devices have been made that have properties that exceed those made from SiC, these devices cannot yet be manufactured. Our work suggests the dominant problem is contamination of the metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) films by the carbon in the trimethyl gallium (TMGa). We suggest a better alternative is to grow the films by hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE), which requires that conducting GaN substrates be grown to reduce the on-resistance (RON-SP) for the back side diodes. We also show that dislocations appear to strongly affect diode properties such as the ideality factor, but their effect on the breakdown voltage appears to be a less significant problem than was previously thought.

We are developing an optical line-of-sight signaling technology that enables mobile devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops to identify, locate, and receive information from other devices and infrastructure within their vicinity. Using this technology we can determine where particular devices are with respect to each other in a room - the angles between the devices - and we can use our mobile devices to read light-emitting codes similar to Quick Response (QR) codes in the environment. Our technology uses a robust encoding method and can tolerate shaking due to unsteady hands holding the mobile devices. Experimental results using hand-held cameras show our technology can accurately and robustly locate and decode signals from small LED emitters even at indoor distances of at least 5 meters.

Twenty years ago, when Captain Jean-Luc Picard ordered: "Tea, Earl Grey, hot" it emerged in a pot from the Star Trek replicator, a machine which made everything and anything from seemingly nothing. An image was created which is so ingrained in our perception of the possible future that 3D printing is perceived by many to be todays? equivalent of the replicator. Does it make sense to print everything and anything on a 3D printer? The media and countless amateur videos suggest that the possibilities are boundless, from a cake to a door handle, from designer shoes to a washer and 3D printing will replace traditional assembly line manufacturing in the near future. Traditional manufacturing has its drawbacks, especially mass production, but it can produce high quality for an amazingly low cost. 3D printing, on the other hand, generates items within a few hours which can be customized each time they are made. However, only in a very few cases can the quality of a mass produced item be attained via 3D printing. In this paper, we discuss glass manufacturing in the UK as an example.

We are in the middle of another revolution in information processing and distribution. After the invention of script and then print, pictures are taking over again. The number of gadgets with displays is larger than the world population. On average every single person on earth owns at least one device with a display on it. These displays are the portals to everything we do: communicating, reading, shopping, learning etc. But are they up to the job? The most successful display technology to date is still the liquid crystal display. It is a well established technology which can be scaled in size from small to large and, depending on the drive electronics, has no significant inherent limits to resolution. However, poor light efficiency and data congestion caused by high pixel densities are still technical challenges in need of good solutions. Could electrophoresis in a liquid crystal host be the answer? The fundamental basics and technical challenges of this interesting new approach will be discussed.

This paper presents the development of a versatile sensor platform that is well-suited for autonomous data acquisition in environmental monitoring. The key advantages of the platform are its compact design, implemented onboard sensors, wireless communication and further standard interfaces to connect application specific sensors. The sensor system is subsequently simple to install and the costs for the preparation and execution of a measurement task are low. The paper provides details of the platform design and key characteristics as well as data acquisition-, communication-, and data storage strategy. A practical exemplary application in the field of environmental monitoring - the determination of acceleration of plants due to wind load - is presented.

A novel sensor buoy platform was developed for detailed environmental monitoring of coastal areas. Using many buoys in a mesh network on low power ZigBee basis allows dramatic reduction of the overall power consumption, enabling an autonomous operation on a single battery set over 3y. Each buoy acts as sensor node but also as router forwarding messages from neighbor buoys to a centralized server. Thus special attention had to be directed to network synchronization and the handling of processor sleep states. One -wire temperature sensors were used for temperate profiling. Moreover the platform is equipped with several analog and digital inputs allowing the connection of additional sensor and sensor systems. The fist buoy network was designed based on 2.5 GHz RF modules (Atmels ATmegal281 together with the AVR Z-Link AT86RF230). According the specifications of the manufacturer under perfect conditions the maximum transmission range is about 4km. A maximum buoy to buoy distance of approximately 400m could be achieved. Instead of 2.5 GHz technology the final version of the buoys was then equipped with 868 MHz transceivers. A buoy to buoy distance of 3km was possible.
