    Given the many challenges that silicon based transistors are facing in continuedscaling, it has become highly attractive to consider alternate material platforms in thepursuit of high performance electronics, such as InAs for its high electron mobility.Traditionally InAs devices have suffered from many processing difficulties and high offcurrents. However many of these issues have been resolved with the introduction of III-Vnanostructure on insulator platforms. One interesting challenge that remains is the patterned p-type doping of InAs. The scarcity of photolithographically patternable p-typedoping techniques is a major disadvantage of the InAs platform, as it prevents InAs frombeing applied to many known device structures.

    Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS) are integrations of computation with physical processes. These systems must be equipped to handle the inherent concurrency and inexorable passage of time of physical processes. Traditional computing abstractions only concern themselves with the functional aspects of a program, and not its timing properties.In this work, we address the difficulties of handling time in computing systems by reexamining the lower levels of abstraction. In particular, we focus on the instruction set architecture (ISA) layer and its affects on microarchitecture design. The ISA defines the contract between software instructions and hardware implementations. Modern ISAs do not constrain timing properties of instructions as part of the contract. Thus, architecture designs have largely implemented techniques that improve average performance at the expense of execution time variability. This leads to imprecise WCET bounds that limit the timing predictability and timing composability of architectures.

    Advances in research and technology are happening now more than ever in the biotechnology industry. Efficient methods for biological processes and better detection and treatment methods are constantly being sought by researchers. Collaboration among diffe rent fields of science and technology has brought us one step closer towards achieving this goal in this work. One such technology that has the capability of providing efficient methods and processes for biology is printed electronics. Printed electronics is an attractive paradigm for realization of biological microfluidic systems. The large area of these systems makes printing valuable from a cost perspective. Furthermore, since printing allows for easy integration of disparate materials on the same substrate through spatially-specific deposition, printed electronics is particularly useful for integration of diverse biological microfluidic functionality on the same substrate..This work has thus successfully revealed the potential of printed electronics in real-world biological applications and has also paved the way for exciting future research areas for this technology.

    we designed a circuit that inductively harvests electrical energy from the power flowing through the plug prongs when the device is turned on. That signal is rectified into a DC component that charges a capacitor to power the whole network node, while the AC ripple is converted by a sensor mote into a digital communication packet that signifies the amount of power (along with other relevant data) being consumed in a given window of time.

    Matrix multiplication is a fundamental kernel of many high performance and scientific computing applications.Most parallel implementations use classicalO(n3)matrix multiplication, even though there exist algorithms with lower arithmetic complexity. We recently obtained a new Communication-Avoiding Parallel Strassen algorithm (CAPS), based on Strassen’s fast matrix multiplication, that minimizes communication (SPAA’12). It ommunicates asymptotically less than all classical and all previous Strassen-based algorithms, and it attains theoretical lower bounds. In this paper we show that CAPS is also faster in practice. We benchmark and compare its performance to previous algorithms on Hopper (Cray XE6), Intrepid (IBM BG/P), and Franklin (Cray XT4). We demonstrate significant speedups over previous algorithms both for large matrices and for small matrices on large numbers of processors.We model and analyze the performance of CAPS and predict its performance on future exascale platforms.

    In wireless devices, reducing the time the radio is on results in lower power consumption. In resource-constrained wireless networks, then, sending the same data in fewer bytes can greatly extend the lifetime of the network. In this paper, we explore the use of protocolindependent packet compression, a technique orthogonal to current explicit compaction techniques. Such a compression algorithm functions as a transparent layer inside a communication stack. Because it makes no assumption on the specific protocols used, it is generic enough to be used on multiple technologies.

    Tunneling based field effect transistors (TFETs) have the potential for very sharp On/Off transitions. This can drastically reduce the power consumption of modern electronics. They can operate by either electrostatically controlling the thickness of the tunneling barrier or by exploiting a sharp step in the density of states for switching. We show that current TFETs rely on controlling the thickness of the tunneling barrier but they do not achieve the desired performance. In order to get better performance we need to also exploit a sharp step in the density of states.
