The Center for Nondestructive Evaluation at Iowa State University has experience in development of measurement techniques and new sensors using a variety of interrogating energies. This research evaluated feasibility of three technologies—x-ray radiation, groundpenetrating radar (GPR), and magnetic flux leakage (MFL)—for detection and quantification of corrosion of embedded reinforcing steel.The methods provide useful and complementary information. GPR provides a rapid approach to identify reinforcing steel that has anomalous responses. MFL provides similar detection responses but could be optimized to provide more quantitative correlation to actual condition. Full implementation could use either GPR or MFL methods to identify areas of concern, followed by radiography to give a visual image of the actual condition, providing the final guidance for maintenance actions.

7313.一种重型桥梁建造钢板的检测缺陷研究

The flaws in a heavy bridge-making steel plate (Q370qE) were detected by ultrasonic test,the types and formation reasons of which were studied by metallographic examination,scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectrometer.The results showed that the types of the flaws were mainly crack,micropore and inclusion.The formation of crack and micropore was attributed to the center segregation,porosity,as well as the role of structural stress and thermal stress.Moreover,the inclusions were mainly composite oxides (MgO,Al2O3,CaO,etc.) and MnS,the former came from the raw materials and impurity oxides,however,the latter came from the center segregation of the alloying elements.Besides,some improvement measures to reduce detecting flaws were also proposed.

This project consisted of determining how to manufacture burst disks out of stainless steel shim stock, devising a fixture to reliably laser etch the surface of the SSBDs, determining parameters for the laser etching, test the SSBDs for reliability and calibrating them for burst pressure, implementing the SSBDs into the 17-cal launcher, modifying existing launcher components, and finally evaluating SSBD’s effect on launcher performance.

The concrete-filled steel tube structure possesses the advantages stemming from both steel and concrete. When the structure receives pressure, the concrete in the steel tube bears the stresses from three directions owing to the restriction of the steel tube.The combination of both materials can help conquer their respective weakness and bring their strong points into full play.play.Therefore the concrete-filled steel tube structure has a bright future. Whether a structure system has a bright future largely depends on the economic benefit of the system. This paper presents an economic analysis on concrete-filled steel tube structure by way of comparing the reinforced concrete structure.

Among underground coal miners, hearing loss remains one of the most common occupational illnesses.This paper documents the evolution of the bit isolator and chuck isolator. Laboratory testing confirms that production bit and chuck isolators reduce the A-weighted sound level generated during drilling.

7319.无铅奥氏体不锈钢的发展

Pb-free austenitic stainless steels were investigated by adding sulfur, rare earth (Re) elements and bismuth. The metallurgical properties, machinability and mechanical properties of both steels were examined. The results show that a significant amount of grey, spindle shaped inclusions were discovered in austenitic stainless steels, and they should belong to MnS inclusions containing bismuth element and rare earths oxide.
