  • 2702.脑虚拟解剖和白质三维可视化

    This paper presents an immersive visualization tool that helps anatomists to establish a ground truth for brain white matter Fiber bundles. Each step of a progressive anatomical dissection of human brain hemisphere is acquired using a high resolution 3D laser scanner and a photographic device. Each resulting surface is textured with a high resolution image and registered into a common 3D space using fiducial landmarks. Surfaces can be visualized using stereoscopic hardware and are interactively selectable. The tool allows the user to identify specific fiber bundle parts. Extracted fiber bundles are stacked together and rendered in stereoscopy with the corresponding MR volume. Surgeons have validated this tool for creating ground truth in medical imaging with the perspective of validating tractography algorithms.

    The Southwest CO2 Training Center was initiated in November 2009 in response to the need to develop a generation of workers with expertise in carbon capture, utilization and storage (CCUS). Three universities ran the Training Center cooperatively: New Mexico Tech, the University of Utah and Texas A&M University. The overall approach of the Training Center was to conduct education and outreach at a wide range of educational levels, including K-12 students and teachers, undergraduate and graduate students, professionals, and the general public. Key activities included: (1) Outreach targeted development of a video game (Carbon Bond) for middle-school students. (2) A summer program for high-school students. (3) Training for K-12 educators in Utah with a program by the Keystone center on the Climate Status and two offerings of a Masters of Science Teaching class at New Mexico Tech (NMT) on Climate and Carbon Sequestration. (3) Development and approval of an undergraduate curriculum for a concentration in CCUS for geology majors offered at the Earth and Environmental Science Department at NMT. This included a new course in Carbon Sequestration Science and a field course in Reservoir and Caprock Geology. (4) A new graduate-level course in CCUS was developed and offered via distance education to students at the University of Utah (U of U), NMT and the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP). (5) Professional training via a reservoir modeling class, opening up the university courses to professionals, and conducting three webinars on outreach and public perception in CCUS.

    The development of a bulk nano-grained tungsten material has been the subject of ongoing research at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL), Aberdeen Proving Ground, MD. While it has been shown that a powder metallurgy approach can lead to bulk nano-grained tungsten material, it has been a persistent challenge to achieve full density. Commercially available tungsten must undergo complex multi-step processes (both hot and cold working) to obtain a fully dense part. Similar procedures may need to be developed to produce fully dense nano-crystalline tungsten. One problem with post-processing procedures is that bulk nano-grained materials are often less ductile than their large grained counterparts. With conventional commercial tungsten, the brittle nature of the material is overcome by incorporating multi-step hot working procedures. However, for nano-tungsten, recrystallization and grain growth become an issue during processing at elevated temperatures. Commercially, rhenium is often added to tungsten to improve ductility and high temperature stability. By adding rhenium to nano-tungsten, enough ductility might be developed to allow for hot working at temperatures low enough to prevent grain growth. Prior to swaging, it needs to be determined whether or not the rhenium addition does impart ductility to nano-tungsten and, if so, at what temperatures and conditions. In order to test the mechanical properties of nano- tungsten with rhenium at high temperatures, the Gleeble unit (a digital version of the 1500 model produced by Dynamic Systems Incorporated, Poestenkill, New York) at ARL was used. The Gleeble is a process simulation machine designed to mimic the thermal and mechanical conditions that arise during processing.

    We here report on the process of developing a surgical robot that can conduct operation "going inside the body without spreading the operational region". The endoscopic robot that we are developing now has a flexible cylindrical body with functions of a set of human arms at the tip and also with vision and haptic sense functions. We evaluated necessary technology factor to complete this robot into categories such as, transmission of energy, adaptation to insides of the body.

    Research was undertaken to investigate the issues impacting the expansion of containerized cargo in Wisconsin, Minnesota and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Best practices in container pooling, load matching, inland ports and electronic tracking were assessed. Interviews were conducted with key stakeholders to determine regional anomalies. Regional intermodal terminals and depots were cataloged and selective ones toured. Proposals were made for adopting best practices. Outreach to the stakeholders in the region on the results of the study was undertaken.

    The study of intact, living cells using non-invasive optical spec-troscopic methods offers the opportunity to assess cellular structure and organization in a way that is not possible with commonly used cell biology imaging techniques. We have developed a novel spectroscopic technique for diagnosing disease at the cellular level based on using low-coherence interferometry (LCI) to detect the angular distribution of scattered light. Angle-resolved LCI (a/LCI) combines the ability of LCI to isolate scattering from sub-surface tissue layers with the ability of light scattering spec-troscopy to obtain structural information on sub-wavelength scales. In application to examining cellular structure, a/LCI enables quantitative measurements of changes in the size and texture of cell nuclei. These quantitative measurements are characteristic of different pathological states. The capabilities of a/LCI were demonstrated using a clinical system that can be applied in endoscopic surveillance of esophageal tissue, producing high sensitivity and specificity for detecting dysplastic tissues in vivo. Experiments with in vitro cell samples also show the utility of a/LCI in observing structural changes due to environmental stimuli as well as detecting apoptosis due to chemotherapeutic agents.

    In support of the Bioenergy Technologies Office, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) are undertaking studies of biomass conversion technologies to hydrocarbon fuels to identify barriers and target research toward reducing conversion costs. Process designs and preliminary economic estimates for each of these pathway cases were developed using rigorous modeling tools (Aspen Plus and Chemcad). These analyses incorporated the best information available at the time of development, including data from recent pilot- and bench-scale demonstrations, collaborative industrial and academic partners, and published literature and patents. The economic results of these analyses are in the process of further refinement and will be published in FY13 and FY14 design reports. This report summarizes the preliminary technical data used for the models and identified data gaps. This technology pathway case investigates the feasibility of using whole wet microalgae as a feedstock for conversion via hydrothermal liquefaction. Technical barriers and key research needs have been assessed in order for the hydrothermal liquefaction of microalgae to be competitive with petroleum-derived gasoline-, diesel-, and jet-range hydrocarbon blendstocks.

    Prostate cancer disproportionately afflicts African-American men. As such, we feel that it is critically important to recruit researchers from this population if we are to conquer this disease. Numerous programs have attempted to recruit minorities to biomedical research and prostate cancer in particular. Often this involves a short period of research immersion during a summer semester. However, it has been shown that many of these trainees do not persevere in the selected area due to the singular nature of the experience. Our goal is to formalize a program to broaden the scope of and enlarge Tuskegee University s prostate cancer research , which will be accomplished through tatargeting interested undergraduate students early during their science studies at Tuskegee University and enabling them to participate in summer research and education training periods at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute as part of their overall prostate cancer education.
