    The overall goal of this study was achieved: Replicated the numerical assessment performed by Chen et. al. (2005). Displayed the ability of Thermal Desktop to be coupled with thermo-electrochemical analysis techniques. such that the local heat generated on the cells is a function of the model itself using logic blocks and arrays. Differences in the TD temperature vs. depth of discharge profiles and Chen's was most likely due to differences in two primary areas: Contact regions and conductance values. Differences in density and specific heat values. center dot The model results are highly dependent on the accuracy of the material properties with respect to the multiple layers of an individual cell.

    Because the direction of a single antenna is limited,and for strengthening the direct radiant ability of the antenna,we will put the weaker direction antennas together in some way to constitute an antenna array system.The antenna array is also called the array antenna or a disperse antenna array.The antenna cell can be the symmetry center-fed dipole,the aperture antenna,the circle antenna or other forms of the antennas whose direction are limited.In practice,the antenna array is almost constituted of similar antenna cells.I have mainly completed the antenna array direction diagram in conditions of some kinds of parameters.And at last,I get the useful results for practice.This also provides theories basis for the analysis of smart antenna.

    The goal of this activity was to carry out program implementation and technical projects in support of the ARRA-funded Advanced Materials in Support of EERE Needs to Advance Clean Energy Technologies Program of the DOE Advanced Manufacturing Office (AMO) (formerly the Industrial Technologies Program (ITP)). The work was organized into eight projects in four materials areas: strategic materials, structural materials, energy storage and production materials, and advanced/field/transient processing. Strategic materials included work on titanium, magnesium and carbon fiber. Structural materials included work on alumina forming austentic (AFA) and CF8C-Plus steels. The advanced batteries and production materials projects included work on advanced batteries and photovoltaic devices. Advanced/field/transient processing included work on magnetic field processing. Details of the work in the eight projects are available in the project final reports which have been previously submitted.

  • 254.可重构蜂窝光子晶体阵列(RCPA)

    This AFOSR-supported research was started in July 2009 and is directed toward the development of a new technology platform for optical and microwave signal processing based on reconfigurable integrated optics devices. This technology has the potential to revolutionize the design circle of optical and high frequency RF systems by providing a common platform for a diverse range of applications. We expect that the impact of the proposed platform in the related fields to be similar to that of field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) on digital signal processing and digital IC design. The main idea behind RCPA's design is to implement a multi-input multi-output (MIMO) optical processing block that can be adjusted to realize any desired transfer function matrix that lies within the limits defined by the system specifications. The proposed architecture for the RCPA is based on tunable cross-connected element matrices at the input and output and an array of processing unit cells. The proposed architecture will be realized on silicon-on-isolator (SOI) platforms by using coupled micro-resonator and waveguide structures as primary building elements. The basic tunability in the device will be implemented using tunable phase-shifter and couplers based on the thermo-optic effect and free carrier injection. To achieve this goal, in what follows, different steps (including theoretical and modeling tools development, microcavity fabrication and characterization techniques, and methods to develop chip-scale devices) will be presented in detail, with the idea being to address the several challenges before the realization of RCPA chips in both the architecture and device level. Our research in this field has already resulted in a number of scientific publications and technical presentations. A complete list of journal papers and conference presentations is included at the end of this report. AFOSR support has been acknowledged in all these publications and presentations.

    In an effort to characterize the dynamics typical of school bus operation, National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) researchers set out to gather in-use duty cycle data from school bus fleets operating across the country. Employing a combination of Isaac Instruments GPS/CAN data loggers in conjunction with existing onboard telemetric systems resulted in the capture of operating information for more than 200 individual vehicles in three geographically unique domestic locations. In total, over 1,500 individual operational route shifts from Washington, New York, and Colorado were collected. Upon completing the collection of in-use field data using either NREL-installed data acquisition devices or existing onboard telemetry systems, large-scale duty-cycle statistical analyses were performed to examine underlying vehicle dynamics trends within the data and to explore vehicle operation variations between fleet locations. Based on the results of these analyses, high, low, and average vehicle dynamics requirements were determined, resulting in the selection of representative standard chassis dynamometer test cycles for each condition. In this paper, the methodology and accompanying results of the large-scale duty-cycle statistical analysis are presented, including graphical and tabular representations of a number of relationships between key duty-cycle metrics observed within the larger data set.

    Fission fragment direct energy conversion has been considered in the past for the purpose of increasing nuclear power plant efficiency and for advanced space propulsion. Since the fragments carry electric charge (typically in the order of 20 e) and have 100 MeV-range kinetic energy, techniques utilizing very high-voltage DC electrodes have been considered. This study is focused on a different approach: the kinetic energy of the charged fission fragments is converted into alternating current by means of a traveling wave coupling scheme (Traveling Wave Direct Energy Converter, TWDEC), thereby not requiring the utilization of high voltage technology.

    Electrolytes play a central role in performance and aging in most electrochemical systems. As automotive and grid applications place a higher reliance on electrochemical stored energy, it becomes more urgent to have electrolyte components that enable optimal battery performance while promoting battery safety and longevity. Safety remains a foremost concern for widespread utilization of Li-ion technology in electric-drive vehicles, especially as the focus turns to higher voltage systems (5V). This work capitalizes on the long established INL expertise regarding phosphazene chemistry, aimed at battery-viable compounds for electrolytes and electrodes that are highly tolerant to abusive conditions. This report showcases our 2013 work for the DOE applied battery research (ABR) program, wherein testing results are summarized for INL electrolytes and alternative anode materials.

    This report describes the redesign and demonstration of an experiment, developed by the Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center (NSRDEC), to measure the response of energy absorbing materials behind a buffer material, loaded with the shockwave and dynamic pressure pulse in a shock tube. This test has application in the development of body armor for blast attenuation and impact attenuation. Foam materials are rapidly compressed between the striker (buffer) and fixed test plate at dynamic strain rates reaching peak levels between 500-1000/s. Foam stress is calculated by measuring the reaction force of the material with a dynamic load cell. Foam compression is measured through high speed video image analysis. With the current experimental set-up, the material test results are very similar to those obtained with a drop weight impact test.

    Syntheses of platinum (Pt) nanoparticles have been intensively studied for their application to polymer electrolyte fuel cells (PEFCs), in which a sluggish oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) on a cathode is one of the biggest issues. In this research, Pt nanoparticles were prepared by ion implantation in glassy carbon (GC) substrates for the first time. We expect that ion implantation and the subsequent thermal treatment can achieve efficient growth of the particles leading to high-performance catalysts with less amount of expensive noble metal. This report describes our preparation procedure and morphological properties of the formed Pt particles.

    The research under this project focused on a theoretical and computational modeling of dislocation dynamics of mesoscale deformation of metal single crystals. Specifically, the work aimed to implement a continuum statistical theory of dislocations to understand strain hardening and cell structure formation under monotonic loading. These aspects of crystal deformation are manifestations of the evolution of the underlying dislocation system under mechanical loading. The project had three research tasks: 1) Investigating the statistical characteristics of dislocation systems in deformed crystals. 2) Formulating kinetic equations of dislocations and coupling these kinetics equations and crystal mechanics. 3) Computational solution of coupled crystal mechanics and dislocation kinetics.
