This report summarizes key conclusions from analysis of data collected from Chevrolet Volts participating in The EV Project. Topics include how many miles are driven in EV mode, how far vehicles are driven between charging events, and how much energy is charged from the electric grid per charging event. Owners of Chevrolet Volts in 18 metropolitan areas across the United States are participating in The EV Project. They agreed to allow project researchers to monitor the usage of their vehicles throughout the project. In-use data collected between October 1, 2012 and May 31, 2013 from a sample of 1,154 participating Volts were analyzed to determine how these vehicles were being used. This set of privately owned vehicles drove more than 6 million miles and performed over 220,000 charging events in the 8 month study period.

The search for environmentally clean energy sources has spawned a wave of research into the use of carbon nanomaterials for photovoltaic applications. In particular, research using semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes has undergone dramatic transformations due to the availability of high quality samples through colloidal separation techniques. This has led to breakthrough discoveries on how energy and charge transport occurs in these materials and points to applications in energy harvesting. We present a review of the relevant photophysics of carbon nanotubes that dictate processes important for integration as active and passive material elements in thin film photovoltaics. Fundamental processes ranging from light absorption and internal conversion to exciton transport and dissociation are discussed in detail from both a spectroscopic and a device perspective. We also give a perspective on the future of these fascinating materials to be used as active and passive material elements in photovoltaics.

A low voltage,low power up-conversion mixer is presented here for 2.4GHz wireless sensor networks (WSN).It was based on a double-balanced Gilbert cell type.The current-reuse technique was used to reduce the power consumption and negative-resistance compensation technique was used to improve the conversion gain.The mixer was designed in 0.18μm RF CMOS technology,and was simulated with Cadence SpectreRF.The simulation results indicate that the conversion gain is 6.37dB,the noise figure is 15.36dB and the input 1dB compression point is -10.3dBm,while consuming 1mA current for operating voltage at 1V.

Our overall goal is to increase the capabilities of today s long- rage Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs) and Unmanned Underwater Gliders (UUGs) by using high-energy-density lithium-seawater batteries. Specific objectives are (1) to test in the laboratory and ocean new lithium-seawater batteries developed and manufactured by the PolyPlus Battery Company, (2) to discover how to mount and operate these cells to minimize adverse impacts of limited mass transfer with the ambient seawater and of bio-fouling, and (3) to develop a long-range underwater UUV or UUG to exploit this energy source. Our target is to double the range/duration of long-range neutrally buoyant underwater vehicles.

A system for non-venting thermal control for spacesuits was built by integrating two previously developed technologies, namely NASA's Spacesuit Water Membrane Evaporator (SWME), and Creare's flexible version of the Lithium Chloride Absorber Radiator (LCAR). This SEAR system was tested in relevant thermal vacuum conditions. These tests show that a 1 sq m radiator having about three times as much absorption media as in the test article would be required to support a 7 hour spacewalk. The serial flow arrangement of the LCAR of the flexible version proved to be inefficient for venting non-condensable gas (NCG). A different LCAR packaging arrangement was conceived wherein the Portable Life Support System (PLSS) housing would be made with a high-strength carbon fiber composite honeycomb, the cells of which would be filled with the chemical absorption media. This new packaging reduce the mass and volume impact of the SEAR on the Portable Life Support System (PLSS) compared to the flexible design. A 0.2 sq m panel with flight-like honeycomb geometry is being constructed and will be tested in thermal and thermal vacuum conditions. Design analyses forecast improved system performance and improved NCG control. A flight-like regeneration system also is also being built and tested. Design analyses for the structurally integrated prototype as well as the earlier test data show that SEAR is not only practical for spacesuits but also has useful applications in spacecraft thermal control.

Magnetic field imaging using nitrogen-vacancy (NV) centers in diamond has a number of compelling life sciences applications, owing to useful characteristics such as high sensitivity down to nanometer-scale resolution, inherent biocompatibility, no need for electrical sensor contact, and highly- parallel detection of many pixels simultaneously. Quantum Diamond Technologies Inc. (QTDI) has focused primarily in Phase I on one target application and modality: high-throughput, high-sensitivity detection of rare cells and biomarkers. QDTI made significant progress toward this goal in the First Quarter, as reported here.

In this report, we present results of an ongoing study aimed at measuring and optimizing the nonradiative lifetime and the internal radiative quantum efficiency of molecular beam epitaxy (MBE)-grown gallium arsenide (GaAs) solar cells that are grown at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) using different substrate growth temperatures and arsenic (As)/gallium (Ga) flux ratios to determine the growth parameters that maximize the bulk GaAs minority carrier nonradiative lifetime. We report a significant increase in the nonradiative lifetime and the internal radiative quantum efficiency of MBE- grown GaAs/aluminum gallium arsenide (AlGaAs) double heterostructure (DH) structures grown at ARL with a growth temperature of 595 C and an As/Ga flux ratio = 15. Our results show that the nonradiative lifetime and internal radiative quantum efficiency of the DH structures grown using these parameters are comparable to those of the highest quality reported MBE-grown GaAs.

In this report, we Si/C composite with porous and yolk-shell structure, carbon coated mesoporous Fe2O3, C/CuO and S/C composites using aerosol pyrolysis, electrospray and CVD techniques. The electrochemical peroformances of these materials were tested, and the mechanism for long cycling stability and high rate capability of these materials were investigated. The findings were published in top journals. The objectives of this project in the year-two are to develop porous Si/C and C/S composite electrodes for high performance lithium ion batteries and to investigate the mechanism how the porous carbon matrix enhances the cycling stability of Si and S electrodes.

In this paper,a cell balancing circuit for the Lithium-ion battery pack based on the Flyback topology is proposed.Balancing the lithium-ion battery pack is often employed to improve the energy utilization and lifetime of the battery.The proposed circuit uses the minimized power path to simplify the circuit and optimize the balancing efficiency.This paper shows the details of the balancing circuit structure and working principle,introduce the design of the balancing transformer and its theoretical analysis.Finally,experimental results are presented to verify the theoretical analysis.

A Fuel Cycle Research and Development project has investigated an innovative sampling method that could evolve into the next generation sampling and analysis system for metallic elements present in aqueous processing streams. Initially sampling technologies were evaluated and microfluidics sampling chip technology was selected and tested. A conceptual design for a fully automated microcapillary-based system was completed and a robotic automated sampling system was fabricated. The mechanical and sampling operation of the completed sampling system was investigated. In addition, the production of a less expensive, mass produced sampling chip was investigated to avoid chip reuse thus increasing sampling reproducibility/accuracy. The microfluidic based robotic sampling systems mechanical elements were tested to ensure analytical reproducibility and the optimum robotic handling of microfluidic sampling chips.
