    This is a non-technical personal view paper describing how I arrived to the field of fuzzy sets and systems, getting around on the roads opened by Professor Zadeh. Then it is followed by some comments on fuzziness and on the future. The first time I heard of fuzzy sets was during a seminar of Arnold Kaufmann (later on I also read an interview of L.A. Zadeh, called "Les ensembles Flous - un concept precis", in l'lnformatique, 1970) while he was presenting Zadeh's theory and his own research. He was carrying with him the manuscript of his first book on the subject.

    Prostate cancer disproportionately afflicts African-American men. As such, we feel that it is critically important to recruit researchers from this population if we are to conquer this disease. Numerous programs have attempted to recruit minorities to biomedical research and prostate cancer in particular. Often this involves a short period of research immersion during a summer semester. However, it has been shown that many of these trainees do not persevere in the selected area due to the singular nature of the experience. Our goal is to formalize a program to broaden the scope of and enlarge Tuskegee University s prostate cancer research , which will be accomplished through tatargeting interested undergraduate students early during their science studies at Tuskegee University and enabling them to participate in summer research and education training periods at the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute as part of their overall prostate cancer education.

    This chapter discusses how real-life interfacing of external peripherals with a ready-made mobile robot can be successfully achieved. Such a system is hoped to be useful for those research scenarios where, many-a-time, because of the fund constraints, a complete robot system cannot be procured with all its accessories and sensor systems. This chapter discusses how such interfacing can be achieved for the KOALA robot using serial communication in interrupt driven mode.

    No-scar surgery, which aims at performing surgical operations without visible scars, is the vanguard in the field of Minimally Invasive Surgery. No-scar surgery can be performed with flexible instruments, carried by a guide under the vision of an endoscopic camera. This technique brings many benefits for the patient, but also introduces several difficulties for the surgeon. We aim at developing a teleoperated robotic system for assisting surgeons in this kind of operations. In this paper, we present a virtual simulator of the system that allows to assess different control strategies for our robot and to study possible mechanical issues.

    This paper presents a novel approach to the problem of managing mobile robots. It is presupposing the existence of the virtual space in which the calculations are made and the real space containing registered mobile robots. Developed and implemented system combines the best features of agent systems and mobile robot management systems based on a central server. Required system computations were distributed on a separate pieces of software responsible for controlling, called controllers, and monitoring, called monitors. A central communication system that allows to log the state of the system and authorization of connections was used. The solution has been tested using real mobile robots and preceded by an analysis of existing solutions.

    This chapter discusses how a vision based robot navigation scheme can be developed, in a two-layered architecture, in collaboration with IR sensors. The algorithm employs a subgoal based scheme where the attempt is made to follow the shortest path to reach the final goal and also simultaneously achieve the desired obstacle avoidance. The algorithm operates in an iterative fashion with the objective of creating the next subgoal and navigating upto this point in a single iteration such that the final goal is reached in minimum number of iterations, as far as practicable.

    In this chapter, we argue that it is already possible, with existing technologies, to go beyond fictional scenarios of virtual butlers or assistive robot companions, and that realistic, long-term studies of their use contribute much needed knowledge about user styles and hence design requirements. Such a study, undertaken by the EU project SERA (Social Engagement with Robots and Agents) is reported, and the data collected are presented, compared, and discussed. The striking difference between idealized personae (such as "Tina") and real users motivated a detailed case study about the frequently observed issue of initiative and floor management. The case study shows the considerable degree to which users shape human-robot interaction with their individual styles. In conclusion, a few such user styles, together with design consequences, are outlined on the basis of the data analysis, with the aim of enriching future scenario descriptions with more realistic personae.

    DOD estimates that about 24 percent of servicemembers who die in combat could have survived if improved and more timely medical care could be made available. Because multiple DOD organizations conduct research to develop medical products and processes to improve combat casualty care, it is critical that these organizations coordinate their work. It is also important that agencies monitor and assess their performance to help achieve organizational goals, which for DOD include addressing gaps in its capability to provide combat casualty care. The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2012 directed GAO to review DODs combat casualty care research and development programs. This report assesses whether DOD (1) uses a coordinated approach to plan this research; and (2) monitors and assesses this research to determine the extent to which it fills capability gaps and achieves other goals. GAO reviewed DODs policies and documentation; interviewed officials from DOD and other federal agencies; and analyzed metrics DOD used to gauge the progress of its research.
