In chaos-based communications, it is essential to know and to control the spectral features of the chaotic signals to be transmitted, since every communication channel is bandlimited to some extent. In this chapter, we review a proposal of discrete-time communication system using chaotic synchronization in which the spectrum of the transmitted signals can be moderately shaped. Numerical studies on the Lyapunov exponents of the generated signals are presented and related to the performance of this chaotic communication system.

According to DOD, corrosion can significantly affect the cost of facility maintenance and the expected service life of DOD facilities. While corrosion is not always highly visible, it can lead to structural failure, loss of capital investment, and environmental damage. In response to a congressional request, GAO reviewed DOD's corrosion prevention and control program for facilities and infrastructure. In this report, GAO assessed the extent that DOD (1) met reporting requirements, (2) maintained accurate return-on-investment data in its records, and (3) fully informed relevant officials of its corrosion-control efforts. GAO reviewed DOD policies and plans, met with corrosion-control officials, and visited and interviewed officials at 32 installations.

Communication is the action of transmitting and eventually receiving another message in response, as in an exchange of e-mails, for example. In a technical approach, one may say that communication is the process that involves the transmission and reception of messages between a source and an addressee receiver, in which information transmitted through physical resources or equipment, and technological devices are coded at source and decrypted at the destination using agreed systems of signs or sound symbols, written or iconographic. Schematically (Figure 15.1), there are five elements in any communication system, namely, an emitter, an encoder, a transmission channel, a decoder, and a receiver. The encoder handles the message, so it passes through the channel, and the decoder carries out the reverse process. In order to be practical and safe, the construction of a communication system may rennire other comnonents.

A realization of new communication media which realizes transmission of haptic information between distant places is required. Bilateral control system is an effective technique which can share tactile sensation between two systems. However the performance of the bilateral control tends to destabilize and the haptic information deteriorates under communication delay because haptic information has the bilateral informational flow property. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel method to realize simultaneity in bilateral control system under communication delay. The proposed control system is designed to realize the control goal equations for bilateral control regardless of the delay time and is designed symmetrically. Buffering the force information of the own system solves the interference between the modal space caused by the communication delay. The whole control system is stabilized by using the phase lag compensator which has the equivalent meaning of acceleration response feedback with high pass filter. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed by experiments.

The information and communications technology (ICT) field is undergoing a period of tremendous and rapid change. As ICT develops more rapidly, the United States Air Force needs to remain responsive and adaptive to maintain military advantages. The need to integrate ICT developments sooner than our adversaries prompted an assessment of guidelines evaluating how well the AF is doctrinally positioned from a Command and Control perspective to support integration of emerging ICT. A Delphi Study was commissioned by the 689th CCW to forecast the future of mobile Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in austere environments.

A distributed engine control system (DECS) offering flexibility and scalability is envisioned for the next generation of propulsion controls. Perhaps the most touted benefit of a DECS is the potential to reduce the amount of harnessing which connects throughout the engine. Such a system is comprised of several network sections incorporating control nodes or data concentrators (DCs). These DCs contain control logic to perform control function computations and are connected to the full authority digital engine control (FADEC) via a high-speed data communication bus. A novel approach for analyzing and evaluating three topologies; ring, star, and bus in the context of a relevant military engine was described. In this study, the algorithm uses a particle swarm optimization process to evolve solutions to a multi-objective optimization problem. The results of this study indicate there is potential for large wire length savings in a distributed control architecture.

In this chapter, we propose an adaptive equalization scheme for a chaos-based digital communication system. The studied system is a discrete-time version of the one proposed by Wu and Chua that has recently been considered for optical applications. Due to the nonlinear characteristics of the transmitters and receivers and the lack of robustness of chaos synchronization, even minor channel imperfections are enough to hinder communication. Adaptive equalization is succinctly reviewed by focusing on the normalized least-mean-squares (NLMS) algorithm, which is extended to fit the studied chaotic communication system. Simulation results show that the proposed chaotic NLMS can successfully equalize the channel.

The objective of this project was to create a real-time, context-aware transit navigation system. The system integrates the route-planning and real-time tracking functionality provided by current systems into a single, real-time and context-aware application, combining a smartphone end-user device, such as the Apple iPhone, with a sophisticated back-end service. The completed navigation system supports unified real-time transit navigation, including walking, biking or handicapped access, across all three Chicago transit agencies: CTA buses and subway trains, Pace suburban buses, and Metra commuter rail. The back-end is built as a generic routing service, which can be used by any number of client applications. On the client side, an iPhone application has been created, with an attractive user interface and a wide selection of convenient features. The iPhone application has been published on the iTunes App store for public download. The app is downloaded by approx. 2,0003,000 users per month, and has received over 1,000 reviews, many of which are very positive

The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has contracted with the Western Transportation Institute (WTI) at Montana State University (MSU) to develop an Automated Safety Warning Controller. The controller will interface with roadside devices such as sensors and signs. The controller will allow for automated data collection and application of best practice algorithms to analyze sensor data and to actuate related warning messages to motorists. For instance, wind warning messages might be actuated on a changeable message sign (CMS) when wind speed, as read from a sensor, exceeds a given threshold. The controller allows for remote access and administration via standard IP-based connections established through POTS dialup or direct connection to wired access points, but is not dependent on those connections for operation. In other words, the controller will remain locally operable in the event that outside communication is unavailable for whatever reason. Even if a communication link to the outside is unavailable, the controller will continue to monitor and control its associated devices. This functionality is especially important in rural areas where weather conditions make communications services unreliable when the functionality is needed most. The standardized use of such a device would likely result in decreased maintenance costs, improved reliability, and greater flexibility in implementation when compared with one-of-a-kind deployments.
