In this work, I describe the MCP abstraction and the salient details of Akaros. I discuss how the kernel and user-level libraries work together to give an application control over its physical resources and to adapt to the revocation of cores at any time - even when the code is holding locks. I show an order of magnitude less interference for the MCP compared to Linux, more resilience to the loss of cores for an HPC application, and how a customized user-level scheduler can increase the performance of a simple webserver.

We pose the dynamics modeling problem as direct high-dimensional regression, and take inspiration from recent results in Deep Learning to represent the helicopter dynamics with a Rectified Linear Unit (ReLU) Network Model, a hierarchical neural network model. We provide a simple method for initializing the parameters of the model, and optimization details for training. We describe three baseline models and show that they are significantly outperformed by the ReLU Network Model in experiments on real data, indicating the power of the model to capture useful structure in system dynamics across a rich array of aerobatic maneuvers.

This thesis presents three systems for editing the motion of videos. First, selectively de-animating videos seeks to remove the large-scale motions of one or more objects so that other motions are easier to see. Second, we design a fully automatic system to create portrait cinemagraphs by tracking facial features and de-animating the video with respect to the face and torso.Third, we present a user-assisted video stabilization algorithm that is able to stabilize challenging videos when state-of-the-art automatic algorithms fail to generate a satisfactory result.

In this work, we built a tool that processes users' network traces and outputs tracker strings such as usernames, cookies, IMEI numbers and the like, that uniquely identify a machine/device/browser. The key challenge in automatically capturing trackers from raw traces is dealing with enterprise-sized data. We tackle this problem by applying data-driven multi-stage filtering, thereby pruning the size of network traces to be analyzed. Each filtering step has a trade-off between between false positive rate and potentially interesting information lost (false negatives).

In this dissertation, we develop the architecture and algorithms for markerless motion capture with a multi-view structured light system. In contrast to existing markerless approaches that use multiple camera streams, we reconstruct the scene by combining the views from three structured light stations using sinusoidal phase shift patterns, each equipped with one projector, a stereo pair of cameras for phase unwrapping, and a color camera. The three stations surround the subject and are time multiplexed to avoid interference. Phase-shifted sinusoidal patterns offer low decoding complexity, require as few as three projection frames per reconstruction, and are well suited for capturing dynamic scenes.

In this thesis, we begin by analyzing the increasing trend of running large-s cale services on Warehouse Scale Computers to provide user functionality. We explain why current networks are poorly suited for delivering consistent, low-latency p erformance. To understand the b enefits of foregoing generality, we design and implement two approaches DeTail and FastLane.To evaluate these approaches, we employ both simulation and implementation platforms.

We present a general method for learning dynamic policies to optimize Anytime performance in visual recognition. We approach this problem from the perspective of Markov Decision Processes, and use reinforcement learning techniques. Crucially, decisions are made at test time and depend;on observed data and intermediate results. Our method is applicable to a wide variety of existing detectors and classifiers, as it learns from execution traces and requires no special knowledge of their implementation.

With our framework, efficiency programmers write and/or generate customized OpenCL snippets at runtime and the framework automatically fuses, compiles, and executes these operations based on a Python description.We evaluate the framework with case studies of two very different applications: space-time adaptive radar processing and optical flow. For a space-time adaptive radar pro cessing application, our framework’s implementation is competitive with a hand-coded implementation that uses a vendor-optimized library. For optical flow, a computer vision application,the framework achieves frame rates that are between 0.5×and 0.97× hand-coded OpenCL performance.

This dissertation advances NEM relay technology by investigating solutions to both of these pressing issues. Ruthenium, whose native oxide is conductive, is proposed as the contacting material to improve relay ON-state resistance stability. Ruthenium-contact relays are fabricated after overcoming several process integration challenges, and show superior ON-state resistance stability in electrical measurements and extended device lifetime. The relay structural film is optimized via stress matching among all layers within the structure, to provide lower strain gradient (below 10-3 μm-1) and hence lower switching voltage. These advancements in relay technology, along with the integration of a metallic interconnect layer, enable complex relay-based circuit demonstration.
