解热镇痛药物是国际医药市场上销量极大的大宗药物，其年销售数量合计高达二十多万吨。据西方著名咨询公司MINTEL报道，2013年全球解热镇痛类药物总销售额约有386亿美元左右，年复合增长率在4%。随着世界多个国家进入老龄化社会，而老年人病痛多，敌对解热镇痛药类产品亦在逐年增长。除了口服型镇痛药制剂外，过去几年里国际市场上治疗骨关节炎引起的走路疼痛、运动引起的肌肉酸痛以及神经性疼痛症的外用型制剂销量猛增，并成为推动全球解热镇痛药物市场快速增长的新动力。虽然已上市的解热镇痛药物品种多达数十个，但国际医药市场上至今仍由几只老品种继续主宰市场，例如扑热息痛、阿司匹林、布洛芬和双氯芬酸等4只经典老药销量合计约占全球解热镇痛药市场总量的近7成，表明老药仍为市场的中坚产品，包括COX-2在内的镇痛新药难以撼动老产品的市场垄断地位。如据MINTEL公司的报告中披露：2013年发达国家市场上最畅销的7只解热镇痛药物(按其销售数量排名)依次为：1.扑热息痛2.阿司匹林3.双氯芬酸4.安乃近5.布洛芬6.酮替芬和7.萘普生。据该报告中的结论，上述7只产品销售额合计约占西方国家解热镇痛药物市场总份额的7-8成，而其它几十只镇痛药物销售额合计仅占剩余2-3成份额。表明老药仍主宰着西方解热镇痛药市场。
