Vehicle retarder has been researched and applied for more than 40 years in China, but compares with foreign countries, China’s vehicle retarder industry started in a relatively late stage. As early as 1964, Shanghai Coach Factory had developed eddy current retarder, but the application didn’t get the deserved attention due to various reasons. Until to the end of 1990s, the eddy current retarders which produced by French Telma Company and Spanish Frenelsa Company were sold to China and Chinese people have learned something about vehicle retarder. In 2202, “JT/T325 Type Classify of Operating Coaches and Grade Estimation Standards” which released by China Ministry of Communications provided that large and medium level II and level III of operating road coaches must be equipped with retarder. The formulation of these standards plays the positive driven role in improving China’s vehicle retarder industry.
