Characterization of biomass burning from space has been the subject of an extensive body of literature published over the last few decades. Given the importance of this topic, we review how satellite observations contribute toward improving the representation of biomass burning quantitatively in climate and air-quality modeling and assessment. Satellite observations related to biomass burning may be classified into five broad categories: (i) active fire location and energy release, (ii) burned areas and burn severity, (iii) smoke plume physical disposition, (iv) aerosol distribution and particle properties, and (v) trace gas concentrations. Each of these categories involves multiple parameters used in characterizing specific aspects of the biomass-burning phenomenon.

Advanced in situ optical water-quality sensors and new techniques for data analysis hold enormous promise for furthering scientific understanding of aquatic systems. These sensors measure important biogeochemical parameters for long deployments, enabling the capture of data at time scales over which they vary most meaningfully. The high-frequency, real-time water-quality data they generate provide opportuni-ties for early warning of water-quality deterioration, trend detection, and science-based decision support.

Bioplastics are plastics that have been made from renewable biomass sources or food crops such as vegetable fat, corn starch, vegetable oil, pea starch, and microbiota. The different types of bioplastics available include polymers that are directly extracted from biomass and processed, polymers that are made from bio-based precursors such as PLA, and polymers that are made by bacteria such as PHA and PHB. Bioplastics are different from conventional plastics, and they can be used to produce various products such as utensils, bags, furniture, carpets, films, bottles, cups, and packaging materials. They are less harmful than other plastics, which are generally made from fossil fuels (such as petroleum), and they produce lower amounts of GHGs than other plastics. Consequently, the use of bioplastics helps in the reduction of carbon emissions, which is not possible with fossil fuel-based plastics. Bioplastics are widely used in the Packaging sector as they are eco-friendly in nature and reduce the risk of food contamination.

The report was prepared for the International Energy Agency (IEA) Hydrogen Program and represents the result of subtask C, Annex 10 - Photoproduction of Hydrogen. The concept of using solar energy to drive the conversion of water into hydrogen and oxygen has been examined, from the standpoints of potential and ideal efficiencies, measurement of (and how to calculate) solar hydrogen production efficiencies, a survey of the state-of-the-art, and a technological assessment of various solar hydrogen options. The analysis demonstrates that the ideal limit of the conversion efficiency for 1 sun irradiance is (approximately)31for a single photosystem scheme and (approximately)42for a dual photosystem scheme. However, practical considerations indicate that real efficiencies will not likely exceed (approximately)10and (approximately)16for single and dual photosystem schemes, respectively. Four types of solar photochemical hydrogen systems have been identified: photochemical systems, semiconductor systems, photobiological systems, and hybrid and other systems.
