TCP’s slow-start was designed to prevent hosts from sending more data into the network than it is capable of transmitting. A key component of slow-start is the initial congestion window or init_cwnd. Today, it is set to at most four segments or roughly 4KB of data. As a result, every short-lived TCP connection (henceforth “short flow”) suffers a performance hit when it comes to throughput (and by extension, latency), for it does not last long enough to achieve its fair share of the network bandwidth. A commonly proposed technique to lower latency for these short connections is to increase the size of TCP’s initial congestion window. However, simply increasing the init_cwnd does not protect short flows from packet loss, which affects them more adversely than it affects long-lived TCP connections. In this paper, we introduce the concept of a super-packet to augment the proposal of increasing the initial congestion window. A super-packet is a network abstraction consisting of a finite number of consecutive packets. These packets form a logical unit on which a router makes a forwarding decision. We will present an efficient algorithm for super-packet admission in routers, conduct a security analysis of the algorithm, discuss deployment opportunities, and analyze the benefits of using super-packets.

We investigate the relationship between visual elements and statistical quantities in cities.Although certain city statistics like the presence of trees and graffiti have a natural connection to visual elements, more abstract statistical quantities such as crime rates and housing prices relate to visual content in a less intuitive way. We show that there is a strong connection between visual elements and these statistics and that this relationship is general enough to predict these statistics in new cities.

We describe an approach to automatically generate a floor plan for the interior environment of a building using laser scan data. This floor plan is meant to accurately indicate the positions of walls within an area of interest in the building. The proposed algorithm separates the floors of a building scan, selects a representative sampling of wall scans for each floor, and triangulates these samples to develop a watertight representation of the walls for each of the scanned areas. Curves and straight line segments are fit to these walls, in order to mitigate any registration errors from the original scans. This method is not dependent on the scanning system and can successfully process noisy scans with non-zero registration error. Most of the processing is performed after a dramatic dimensionality reduction, yielding a scalable approach. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our approach on a three-story point cloud from a commercial building as well as on the lobby and hallways of a hotel.

We present Sifter, an interface for browsing, comparing and analyzing large collections of image manipulation tutorials based on their command-level structure. Sifter first applies supervised machine learning to identify the commands contained in a collection of 2500 Photoshop tutorials obtained from theWeb.It then provides three different views of the tutorial collection based on the extracted command-level structure.

In this position paper, we present the research initiative for a precision timed (PRET) infrastructure, consisting of languages, compilers, and microarchitectures, where timing is a correctness factor. In particular, the timing semantics in models and programs must be preserved during compilation to ensure that the behavior of real systems complies with models. We also outline new research and design challenges present in such an infrastructure.

Unfortunately, the data independence provided by a traditional relational database system,while useful for agile development, only exacerbates the problem by hiding potentially expensive queries under simple declarative expressions. The goal of this paper is to present a formal connection between synthesis problems that have been considered,largely separately, in the two research communities of control engineering and formal methods. By making this connection mathematically precise, we hope to \bridge the gap" between two research areas that aim at tackling similar synthesis problems, but from di erent angles, and by emphasizing di erent, and often complementary, aspects. Such a formal bridge should be a source of inspiration for new lines of investigation that will leverage the power of the synthesis techniques that have been developed in these two areas.

The goal of this project is to develop an Android Phone App that can be used to measure dimensions of a room and overlay it with a Wi-Fi strength map. This is meant to address suboptimal arrangements of Wi-Fi router/access points, which result in a low speed/unstable/inaccessible Wi-Fi signal coverage in an indoor space. The motivation of the project is to reduce the cost of having a specialist to come to customers property to x Wi-Fi coverage problems. The App developed will enable Android users to identify such problems themselves for free.
