In this paper, we analyze seven MapReduce workload traces from production clusters at Facebook and at Cloudera customers in e-commerce, telecommunications,edia, and retail. Cumulatively, these traces comprise over a year’s worth of data logged from over 5000 machines, and contain over two million jobs that perform 1.6 exabytes of I/O. Key observations include input data forms up to 77% of all bytes, 90% of jobs access KB to GB sized files that make up less than 16% of stored bytes, up to 60% of jobs re-access data that has been touched within the past 6 hours, peak-to-median job submission rates are 9:1 or greater, an average of 68% of all compute time is spent in map, task-seconds-per-byte is a key metric for balancing compute and data bandwidth, task durations range from seconds to hours, and five out of seven workloads contain map-only jobs. We have also deployed a public workload repository with workload replay tools so that the researchers can systematically assess design priorities and compare performance across diverse MapReduce workloads.

Large-scale parallel machines are programmed mainly with the single program, multiple data (SPMD) model of parallelism. This model has advantages of scalability and simplicity, combining independent threads of execution with global collective communication and synchronization operations. However, the model does not fit well with divide-and-conquer parallelism or hierarchical machines that mix shared and distributed memory. In this paper, we define a hierarchical team mechanism that retains the performance and analysis advantages of SPMD parallelism while supporting hierarchical algorithms and machines.We demonstrate how to ensure alignment of collective operations on teams, eliminating a class of deadlocks. We present application case studies showing that the team mechanism is both elegant and powerful, enabling users to exploit the hardware features at different levels of a hierarchical machine and resulting in significant performance gains.

Originally designed as a RESTful protocol to expose reading data from simple instruments, we discuss theshifting role of sMAP as a common interchange format for timeseries data within a number of building projects.Due to the change in role and resulting widened set of use cases, we discuss where sMAP has fallen short anddesign modifications necessary to address them. Key contributions are identifying a set of features required for the broad applicability of a protocol for publishing time-series data, and a concrete proposal and implementationof our design grounded in a diverse set of use cases and real deployments.

终端到终端(device-to-device,D2D)的直通通信实现了联合蜂窝和移动自组网的无缝操作,大幅提高了系统频谱效率和网络容量。介绍了D2D局域网的理论概念和在实践中的应用挑战;并着重论述了跨层资源管理在解决D2D通信中干扰避免问题的重要性,给出了一个无线资源管理实例。数据结果显示,所提出的算法性能接近穷举搜索最优算法,并具有相对较低的复杂度。目前,D2D通信技术表现出能够获得系统高容量和充分利用无线资源的巨大潜力。

There is an increasing number of cloud platforms emerging in both academia and industry. They often federate resources from multiple infrastructures in order to benefit from the unique features that each presents. After introducing the main capabilities and features of OpenStack, this article addresses the integration of OpenStack-based platforms into larger, heterogeneous multi-cloud infrastructures, taking the EU FP7 BonFIRE project as an integration use case. Ultimately, we aim to contribute to the state of the art and provide guidelines to integrators looking to federate Open Stack testbeds into more complex architectures.
