Interactive Storytelling technologies have attracted significant interest in the field of simulation and serious gaming for their potential to provide a principled approach to improve user engagement in training scenarios. In this paper, we explore the use of Interactive Storytelling to support Narrative Medicine as a reflective practice. We describe a workflow for the generation of virtual narratives from high-level descriptions of patients' experiences as perceived by physicians, which can help to objectivize such perceptions and support various forms of analysis.

Our objective was to enable an end-user to create complex queries to drug information sources through functional composition, by creating sequences of functions from application program interfaces (API) to drug terminologies. The development of a functional composition model seeks to link functions from two distinct APIs. An ontology was developed using Protege to model the functions of the RxNorm and NDF-RT APIs by describing the semantics of their input and output. A set of rules were developed to define the interoperable conditions for functional composition. The operational definition of interoperability between function pairs is established by executing the rules on the ontology. We illustrate that the functional composition model supports common use cases, including checking interactions for RxNorm drugs and deploying allergy lists defined in reference to drug properties in NDF-RT. This model supports the RxMix application , an application we developed for enabling complex queries to the RxNorm and NDF-RT APIs.

From the Surface Velocity Program (SVP) drifter current data, a detailed and complete track of strong ocean currents in the north-western Pacific is provided using the bin average method. The focus of this study is on the Kuroshio, the strong western boundary current of the North Pacific flowing northward along the east coast of Taiwan and then turning eastward off southern Japan. With its average flow speed of about 2 knots, the Kuroshio can significantly increase the ship s speed for a super-slow-steaming container ship travelling at speeds of 12 knots between the ports of Southeast Asia and Japan. By properly utilizing knowledge of strong ocean currents to follow the Kuroshio on the northbound runs and avoid it on the return trip, considerable fuel can be saved and the transit time can be reduced. In the future, the detailed Kuroshio saving-energy route could be built into electronic chart systems for all navigators and shipping routers.

Background: As the use of the Internet continues to increase across all age groups and education levels, with usage in the US around 78%, consumers are increasingly turning to the Internet for health related information. Objective: To assess the completeness, accuracy, and consumer friendliness of information on the Internet pertaining to drug-Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) interactions with cardiac drugs. Methods: A review of online information was performed across three search engines and ten drug-CAM pairs. Results: Overall, the quality of the drug-CAM interaction information available online to consumers is fairly poor. Only one site contained an interaction checker that provided interaction information for all ten pairs, but with an accuracy rate of 50%. Reading levels ranged from 10.5-23.5, with a mean of 16.7. A value greater than 22 indicates a graduate level reading skill. Conclusion: Web site developers should be cautious in presenting drug-CAM interaction information unless it is comprehensive and regularly maintained. Consumers should also know how to evaluate sites before trusting the content where the consequences are potentially severe.

This is a meeting overview of 'The Best Approach to Combustion Safety in a Direct Vent World', held June 28, 2012, in San Antonio, Texas. The objective of this Expert Meeting was to identify gaps and barriers that need to be addressed by future research, and to develop data-driven technical recommendations for code updates so that a common approach for combustion safety can be adopted by all members of the building energy efficiency and code communities. The DOE BA program focuses on reducing energy consumption in the nation's housing stock through smart integration of energy efficient design and upgrades. The target is 30%-50% energy savings captured through the application of many measures, including reduction in air infiltration, equipment upgrades, smart controls, and thermal envelope improvements.

Scientists have recently focused their attention on adult stem cells as new and more effective treatments for different diseases and disabilities. In fact, it is known that stem cells are capable of renewing themselves and that they can generate multiple cell types. Today, there is new evidence that stem cells are present in far more tissues and organs than once thought and that these cells are capable of developing into more kinds of cells than previously imagined. In this chapter, we focus the attention on teeth as source of stem cells. In particular, we describe the characteristic of the different types of dental stem cells and their use in tissue engineering.

Target counting in wireless sensor networks has attracted a lot of attention in recent years from both academia and industry. In this chapter, we review various problem formulations and technical approaches proposed in recent literature for target counting. Major existing works are classified into the following four categories: binary counting, numeric counting, energy counting, and compressive counting, based on the sensing capabilities of the network and the underlying theoretical foundations of the technical approaches. Within each category, we summarize the representative works according to their objectives, technical methods, performances, and advantages and disadvantages. Comparative evaluations are provided to illustrate the influence of different sensor network settings on the target counting accuracy. The applicable environments of these algorithms are also discussed at the end of the chapter.

The objective of this project is to examine the impact that common installation practices and age-induced equipment degradation may have on the installed performance of natural gas furnaces, as measured by steady-state efficiency and AFUE. PARR identified 12 furnaces of various ages and efficiencies that were operating in residential homes in the Des Moines, Iowa metropolitan area and worked with a local heating, ventilation, and air conditioning contractor to retrieve them and test them for steady-state efficiency and AFUE in the lab. Prior to removal, system airflow, static pressure, equipment temperature rise, and flue loss measurements were recorded for each furnace.

The main components of Zadeh's scientific contribution are shown. In particular, his information granulation theory is considered in the context of sensor data mining. The concept of granule and granular structures are presented, mereological approach to generating granules is developed, some ways of constructing and using granules in multi-valued logics are shown. Basic ideas of granular computing are discussed. Here the problem of sensor data mining is considered from the viewpoint of granular computing. The notion of logical pragmatics is clarified. The investigation of mathematical structures for data pragmatic analysis is associated with interpreting multi-valued logics and bilattices as formal pragmatics techniques. The concept of Belnap's sensor is proposed, the combinations of Belnap's sensors are discussed. Logical-algebraic models of communication between two sensors are constructed on the basis of bilattices. As a result, the map for dealing with different sensor data inconsistencies is introduced and algorithm for eliminating faults in sensor networks is suggested.
