This chapter discusses how such interfacing can be achieved for the KOALA robot using serial communication in interrupt driven mode.

This chapter presents a detailed, step-by-step demonstration of how vision-based navigation modules can be actually implemented in real life, under 32-bit Windows environment. These lessons start with a simple development of capturing image frames from a running video and then gradually proceeds to more complex tasks of incorporating image processing capabilities e.g. filtering techniques, contrast enhancement, adaptive thresholding etc. Then the lessons demonstrate how to extract path for the robot from such images and how a rule-based approach can be utilized to determine left and right wheel speed settings of a differential drive system.

This paper describes an ultra-fast fiber optic pressure sensor based on the Fabry Perot principle for the application of measuring the rapid pressure changes in a blast event. A shock tube experiment performed in US Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center has demonstrated that the resonant frequency of the sensor is 4.12 MHz, which is relatively close to the designed theoretical value of 4.113 MHz. Moreover, the experiment illustrated that the sensor has a rise time of 120 ns, which demonstrates that the sensor is capable of observing the dynamics of the pressure transient during a blast event.

Space agency mission plans state the need to measure the seismic activity on Venus. Because of the high temperature on Venus (462° C average surface temperature) and the difficulty in placing and wiring multiple sensors using robots, a high temperature, wireless sensor using a wide bandgap semiconductor is an attractive option. This paper presents the description and proof of concept measurements of a high temperature, wireless seismometer sensor for Venus. A variation in inductance of a coil caused by the movement of an aluminum probe held in the coil and attached to a balanced leaf-spring seismometer causes a variation of 700 Hz in the transmitted signal from the oscillator/sensor system at 426° C. This result indicates that the concept may be used on Venus.

Situational awareness (SA) is recognized as a key functionality in smart grids. With the large scale deployment of synchronized phasor measurements in the United States and worldwide, wide-area situational awareness is greatly improved due to the high sampling speed, new granularity of phasor values, and time synchronization. Synchronized measurements enhance the monitoring of overall bulk power system dynamic behavior; providing critical information for understanding and responding to power system disturbances. In this chapter, an overview of successful synchrophasor applications to enhance situational awareness is discussed. Topics include event triggering, event size estimation, event location, oscillation detection and modal analysis for disturbances impacting the bulk power system. Real-time wide-area frequency and phase angle visualization will also be discussed. Several examples of wide area situational awareness in the North American power grid are given. Future challenges and trends are discussed.

Advanced in situ optical water-quality sensors and new techniques for data analysis hold enormous promise for furthering scientific understanding of aquatic systems. These sensors measure important biogeochemical parameters for long deployments, enabling the capture of data at time scales over which they vary most meaningfully. The high-frequency, real-time water-quality data they generate provide opportuni-ties for early warning of water-quality deterioration, trend detection, and science-based decision support.

The RF directional sensor based on phase-sensitive detection using two sorts of Josephson parametric amplifiers has been analyzed and investigated experimentally. To construct the Josephson parametric amplifier, we use a SQUID (either single-cell SQUID or two-cell SQUID) embedded in a superconducting coplanar waveguide. We operated the circuit at a frequency of several GHz and measured the amplitude response of the SQUID-based Josephson parametric amplifier. Nonlinearity and flux tunability in the reported experiments was limited by relatively large critical current density and therefore small nonlinear inductance of the SQUID. The demonstrated phase sensitivity was 1.2 dB / rad. It appears feasible to improve the sensitivity of developed RF sensor by reducing the critical current of the Josephson junctions.

A key mission of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability (OE) is conducting research and development to enhance the security and reliability of the nation's energy infrastructure. Improving the security of control systems, which enable the automated control of our energy production and distribution, is critical for protecting the energy infrastructure and the integral function that it serves. The DOE-OE Control Systems Security Program is actively pursuing advanced security solutions for control systems. The focus of this report is analyzing how, where, and what type of wireless communications are suitable for deployment in the electric power system and to inform implementers of their options in wireless technologies. The discussions in this report are applicable to enhancing both the communications infrastructure of the current electric power system and new smart system deployments.

This report serves as documented evidence for future use of this open-sourced idea of the measurement of two-axis of linear acceleration from a previous sensor originally designed to operate as a single-axis rotation sensor.

To achieve the goal of the proposal, we created nano-structured surfaces to increase the pixel density and hence resolution of the opto- electronic sensor array by a factor of 3 in each direction, x and y. The proof of concept of this mathematical framework in the visible part of the optical spectrum was published in 2 journal articles (both published in Applied Physics Letters). In addition to this, we also experimentally applied the same concept to IR part of the optical spectrum and thus demonstrated the feasibility of our approach for IR focal plane arrays. these results will be presented at SPIE Defense, Security and Sensing Conference in April 2012.
