Radiopharmaceuticals
are radioactive substances that are used for diagnosis or therapy purposes.
These are made up of two components: a radioactive isotope that can be injected
safely into the body, and a carrier molecule that delivers the isotope to the
area to be treated or examined. Radiopharmaceuticals set out radiation, mostly
in the form of alpha and beta particles, and target the affected areas. The
dosages of radiopharmaceuticals that are used to diagnose medical problems
vary, depending on the type of diagnosis. When radiopharmaceuticals are
injected into the body, they emit radiation that can be traced with special
cameras or computers. Radiopharmaceuticals find a major application in the
field of oncology. Radiopharmaceuticals used in cancer treatment are small and
simple substances, containing a radioactive isotope, and target specific areas
of the body where cancer is present.
