An automated dispensing machine is a type of vending machine used for dispensing drugs and other medical supplies to patients. It is also known as a unit-based cabinet, automated dispensing device, and automated distribution cabinet. Automated dispensing machines allow medications to be deposited and distributed near the point of care while monitoring and tracking drug distribution. Technological advancements in pharmacy automation have led to innovations in dispensing machines such as centralized control and decentralized control methods of operation. Dispensing machines have also helped in elevating patient care and allowing extra time for patient counseling as automation saves pharmacists' time, which in turn encourages them to provide guidance to patients about their medications. Some other benefits of automated dispensing machines include enhanced nurse access to medications, more effective medication billing and inventory control, greater medication safety, and potential reductions in medication errors.

Generic drugs are copies of patented brand name drugs that have identical dosage form, potency, route of administration, quality, and intended use. These drugs contain the same active ingredients as the original brand name drugs. They are available once the patent protections given to the original developers have expired and generally cost 50-70 percent less than their brand name counterparts. However, they meet the same standards for safety, quality, and effectiveness as innovator drugs because the manufacturers typically do not have additional expenses for developing and marketing a new drug. When a patent expires, manufacturers can apply for FDA approval to produce and sell generic versions of the drug. For the approval of generics, which requi marketing authorization and are exact or close copies of already approved drugs, manufacturers are required to apply for an ANDA approval .
