摘 要:Generic drugs are copies of patented brand name drugs that have identical dosage form, potency, route of administration, quality, and intended use. These drugs contain the same active ingredients as the original brand name drugs. They are available once the patent protections given to the original developers have expired and generally cost 50-70 percent less than their brand name counterparts. However, they meet the same standards for safety, quality, and effectiveness as innovator drugs because the manufacturers typically do not have additional expenses for developing and marketing a new drug. When a patent expires, manufacturers can apply for FDA approval to produce and sell generic versions of the drug. For the approval of generics, which requi marketing authorization and are exact or close copies of already approved drugs, manufacturers are required to apply for an ANDA approval .
