While the CVR records radio transmissions, pilot's voices, and engine noises, the FDR preserves a recording of the operating functions of a plane such as time, altitude, fuel levels, and airspeed. Similarly, the VDR records data such as wind speed and direction, the ship's location, and the direction that the ship is traveling. The data recorded from these devices is retrieved and used for investigating accidents.

MEMS are miniature devices manufactured using microfabrication technology. These devices can vary from one micron to several millimeters.
