The dramatic growth of Internet and network technologies, etc leads to different perspectives of computing methodologies as well as changes of software business model. If the traditional business model for software is one-time payment for a license for one machine with unlimited use, the development of Internet and network technologies, etc makes it possible for users to pay on their consumption as they pay for water, gas and electricity. With advanced technology all computing and storing process can be centralized on the infrastructure of service providers. With this new model, users don't have to concern about deploying their infrastructure, security, etc which will be responsible by service providers. This new trend grows extremely fast in last couple years and attracts a lot of researches from scholars such as Grid Computing model, Client Server model and especially Cloud Computing model with its scalability. In this paper we do not analyze differences between these utility computing models and what model will be the main field in the future. Instead we present how to use computer networks as a mean of computing and simulation and how computer networks are considered as a solution to boost technology development. Two software applications through computer networks were developed and applied successfully in teaching and learning courses in Auburn University and Bradley University are presented in this paper. It is a typical example of enhanced interaction between human and CAD tools while computer networks play a role as a human system interface.

Multivariate regression models are often used for the purpose of prognosis. Parameters of such models are estimated on the basis of learning sets, where feature vectors (independent variables) are combined with values of response (target) variable. The values of response variable can be determined only with some uncertainty in some important applications. For example, in survival analysis, the values of response variable is often censored and can be represented as intervals. The interval regression approach has been proposed for designing prognostic tools in circumstances of such type of uncertainty. The possibility of using the convex and piecewise linear (CPL) functions in designing linear prognostic models on the basis of interval learning sets is examined in the paper.

Chapter reviews the solutions used in diagnostic-advisory system, dedicated to the needs of the foundry industry. Multimedia techniques used in the system were selected to create a comprehensive capabilities of contact between user and computer system. The first part of the considerations apply to work in diagnostic mode, including identification of castings defects and determine the causes of their occurrence, the second part is a look at some of the features of the system implemented in a consultative mode, such as the integration of knowledge or technical and market expertise. Many illustrations was used to illustrate the various forms of contact with the user.

An area measurement method of paint bubble based on computer vision is proposed. Firstly, through a camera calibration, the lens distortion is removed and the mapping between image coordinate and real world coordinate is constructed. Secondly, a novel color image segmentation method based on graph-cut, whose seeds can be auto-marked, is proposed, and with the method, paint bubbles are extracted from image. Finally, with camera calibrated parameter, the size of segmented paint bubbles is figured out. Experiment result shows that the proposed method gains higher precision than classical graph-cut segmentation method and can figure out the area of the bubble automatically.

The main objective of Science Gateways is to give users remote access to supercomputers and large-scale computing environments in an interactive, web-based and graphical manner. We present a tool, called Vine Toolkit, that has been successfully used as a core web platform for various Science Gateways. Vine Toolkit is a modular, extensible and easy-to-use tool as well as a high-level Application Programming Interface (API) for various applications, visualization components and building blocks. In a nutshell, it allows interoperability between many different HPC and grid technologies within the service layer. As a result, Vine Toolkit provides an ability to build a portal upon different HPC technologies working together to deliver a complete solution to the users. In this article, we briefly describe our most complex and feature-rich project - the Nanotechnology Gateway, as well as a set of tools relevant to advanced scientific portals, development of which was driven by various requirements defined by scientists and gathered in scope of the PL-Grid project.

The term "gateway" refers to a city, or to some transport and logistics-oriented area in a city, that is associated with goods movement in, out, and through the area. Although the definition of a gateway is typically focused on goods movement, a more holistic view is adopted with consideration of the movements of people and the environmental implications of all movements. The relevance of this view is based on the interdependence of commercial and persons mobility, because all moves are happening within the same transport network, and is based on considerations of quality of life in a gateway city. Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, was chosen to test these concepts. Hamilton had a suitable geographical location, a busy port, an international airport, good highway and railway access, and an educated labor force. The gateway prospects for Hamilton were given perspective through a study of other prominent gateways that distilled success factors. Analytical work focused on multiregional economic impact modeling to assess the direct and indirect effects of Hamilton's potential evolution as a gateway. Local-level analysis, through integrated urban modeling and simulation of scenarios, stressed the impact of gateway development on commercial goods movement, auto commuting levels, emission levels, and transit ridership. Increased emissions resulting from gateway economic development could be overcome with forward-thinking policy focused on the uncongested movement of goods and people, compact urban form, and enhanced public transit working in concert. The addition of light rail transit in Hamilton and the promotion of a compact urban form would be catalysts for sustainable local gateway development. Finally, gateway-oriented development in Hamilton will cause noticeable regional economic growth. The models that were developed can be calibrated for other cities, given appropriate data.

High-speed electronic circuits are needed for Army systems in communications, wireless sensors, imaging, and other systems. Gallium nitride (GaN) technology offers the highest power densities for radio frequency (RF) and wireless integrated circuits. Several GaN broadband high power efficient power amplifier designs for high frequency operation, such as satellite communications (SATCOM), were recently designed and submitted for fabrication using a proprietary 0.15-micrometer GaN process under development at TriQuint Semiconductor. These monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) are being fabricated by TriQuint as part of a recent cooperative research and development agreement (CRADA) with the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL).

Three-dimensional integration is an emerging chip fabrication technique in which multiple integrated circuit dies are joined using conductive posts. 3D integration offers several performance and security advantages, including extremely high bandwidth between the two dies and the ability to augment a processor with a separate die housing custom security features. This thesis performs a feasibility and requirements analysis of a data transformation coprocessor in a three-dimensional integrated circuit. We propose a novel coprocessor architecture in which one layer (control layer) houses application-specific coprocessors for cryptography and compression, which provide acceleration for applications running on a general-purpose processor in another layer (computational layer).
