With touch-based interfaces becoming commonplace on personal computing devices ranging from phones and slates to notebook and desktop PCs, a number of common tasks that were once performed using mouse or keyboard input now need to be performed using fingers on the touch surface. Finger-drawn gestures offer a viable alternative to desktop and keyboard shortcuts as shortcuts for common tasks such as launching of applications and navigation of large media collections. In order to be truly effective, the interface for definition, management and invocation of gestures should be highly intuitive, and optimized for the device. In particular, the process of invoking gestures should be seamless and natural. Further, the recognition of gestures needs to be robust for the specific user. In this paper, we describe GeCCo (Gesture Command and Control), a system for personalized finger gesture shortcuts for touch-enabled desktops and trackpad-enabled notebook PCs. One of the key issues addressed in the design of GeCCo is that of mode switching in the context of notebook PCs. We describe a user study to decide between different interactions for mode switching. The interactions are designed such that mode switch and gesture can be simultaneously indicated. Since new gestures may be defined by the user at any time, statistical pattern classification techniques which require large numbers of training samples for each gesture are not useful. Instead we use nearest-neighbor classification with Dynamic Time Warping (DTW) distance, and a writer adaptation scheme for improving accuracy to desired levels. We conclude the paper with experimental results and some thoughts on next steps.

Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) inertial sensors are commonly used in applications such as inertial navigation and human motion tracking. These inertial sensors provide three-dimensional (3D) orientation, acceleration, rate of turn, and magnetic field information. Manufacturers specify both static and dynamic accuracy for the 3D orientation output of MEMS inertial sensors. The dynamic accuracy is in the form of a root-mean-square (RMS) error and is only valid for certain motions, which are not specified. In this thesis, an investigation of the dynamic accuracy of the Xsens Motion Tracker (MTx) inertial sensor was conducted. The yaw or heading dynamic accuracy of the Microstrain 3DM-GX3-25 inertial sensor also was investigated. A pendulum test apparatus from a previous work was used to test the MTx and GX3. An encoder is installed to the pendulum axis of rotation and provides the reference data needed to calculate the dynamic accuracy of the MTx and GX3. After a series of motion tests, it was concluded that the MTx was within manufacturer specifications for static accuracy but not for dynamic accuracy. More specifically, the heading or yaw accuracy of the MTx and GX3 did not meet manufacturer specifications under the testing motions chosen in this study.

While mobile phones have penetrated deep into tier 2 and 3 cities in India and similar emerging economies, adoption of mobile web content and web services is likely to require the creation of large numbers of relevant applications and services with usable interfaces and interaction paradigms. This paper describes PaperWeb, our effort to enable mobile phone users to use the web for day to day transactions such as paying bills, buying tickets, or fixing appointments, using familiar objects such as paper artifacts. The PaperWeb system addresses two aspects: (i) creation of useful PaperWeb interactions - without programming - by moderately tech-savvy users, and (ii) the use of these interactions by tech-naive users. We describe a user study that motivated PaperWeb, and the design of the PaperWeb system and its technology components. We conclude the paper with a discussion of what has been achieved to date and future directions.

We suggest a method to automatically evaluate employees' subject matter expertise in knowledge management systems. The approach stems from several conclusions that arose in extensive research of subject matter experts and their expertise. We find that self-reported expertise is biased and constantly changing. We, furthermore, observe that automatic methods to infer expertise perform about as well as self-reported profiles. The crux of the proposed method is to combine automatic inference expertise with the benefit of the expert's opinion, and to do so periodically so the profile remains accurate and fresh.
