    This chapter discusses how a vision based robot navigation scheme can be developed, in a two-layered architecture, in collaboration with IR sensors. The algorithm employs a subgoal based scheme where the attempt is made to follow the shortest path to reach the final goal and also simultaneously achieve the desired obstacle avoidance. The algorithm operates in an iterative fashion with the objective of creating the next subgoal and navigating upto this point in a single iteration such that the final goal is reached in minimum number of iterations, as far as practicable.

    This thesis explores an application of a con-resistant trust mechanism to improve the performance of communications-based special protection systems to further enhance their effectiveness and resiliency. New initiatives in the energy sector are paving the way for the emergent communications-based smart grid technology. Smart grids incorporate modern technologies in an effort to be more reliable and efficient. However, with the benefits of this new technology comes added risk. This research utilizes a con-resistant trust mechanism as a method to quickly identify malicious or malfunctioning protection system nodes in order to mitigate the resulting instabilities in the smart grid. The feasibility and performance of this trust architecture is demonstrated through experiments comparing a simulated special protection system implemented with a con-resistant trust mechanism and without via an analysis of variance statistical model. The simulations yield positive results when implementing the con-resistant trust mechanism within the communications- based special protection system for the smart grid.

    Case management applications and, more generally, people-centric processes involve the definition, resolution and communication of commitments for tasks over channels such as chat and email. Identifying and tracking tasks and commitments can help in streamlining the collaborative work in business environments. However, doing so proves challenging due to the syntactical, grammatical, and structural incompleteness of human conversations over chat and email channels. We present a novel approach to automatically identify tasks and commitment creation, delegation, completion, and cancellation in email and chat conversations, based on techniques from natural language processing and machine learning domains. We discover tasks and related parameters from the text of conversations, identify when acommitment to a task emerges and find the state changes of a commitment based features extracted from the text of the conversations. We have developed a prototype and evaluated our approach using real-world chat and email datasets. Our experiments shows high precision for create class i.e., 90% in emails (Enron email corpus) and 80% in a real-world chat dataset and also provides promising results for discharge, delegate, and cancel classes.

    With the increasing popularity of IEEE802.11u-based Wi-Fi CERTIFIED Passpoint program, the IEEE802.11u protocol is being implemented in a large number of Wi-Fi equipments. This paper thoroughly analyzes the security vulnerabilities of IEEE802.11u and discovers three potential attacks: Bogus GAS Response, GAS Initial Request Flooding and Wireless I/O Blocking Attack with GAS Response Burst. The possible countermeasures are fully discussed and suggested, among which how to defend the wireless I/O blocking attack is the focus of the paper since its harm is verified to be beyond IEEE802.11u protocol itself and can severely degrade the performance of Wi-Fi networks. Experimental results with real HP AP product show that the proposed countermeasures can effectively protect the AP from the attacks. Moreover, they do not require any change to the original IEEE 802.11u standard, so it can be easily deployed into current IEEE802.11u-enabled Wi-Fi networks. We believe the works of this paper opens a good starting point for researchers to prompt the maturity of IEEE8011.u standard.
