The world population is growing at an alarming rate and, by estimates, it will grow to over 9 billion by 2050. Demand for animal feed and biofuel will also increase the demand for agricultural production. Also, soil erosion and land pollution are reducing the size of arable land per person. This puts pressure on farmers to increase the yield of the land with the limited size of the agricultural land. Precision farming is a farm management process that is bringing about a paradigm shift in agriculture. It relies on technology to measure agricultural variables like soil contents, yields, and weed utilize precise information about agricultural resources, and subsequently apply specific treatments. This enables the producer to micromanage farming practices and improve production and profits while keeping resource use to a minimum.
