Large-scale cyber-physical infrastructures, such as the Smart Power Grid, are envisioned as some of the core elements of the future Internet of Things. These critical infrastructures move more and more beyond centralized management and control by system operators and administrators. Overloading and failures in the Smart Power Grid threaten the matching of demand-supply especially when new emerging technologies are integrated such as micro-generation, renewable energy resources and electrical vehicles. The integration of these technologies in the Smart Power Grid make the concept of Internet of Things highly applicable in the energy domain. The introduction of automated and decentralized protection mechanisms requires embedded control elements that perform organizational reconfigurations themselves in a spatially distributed environment. The dynamic input and output binding between such control elements is an example of an organization reconfiguration that is traditionally managed offline during the design phase of a cyber-physical system. An introduced computational intelligence for the purpose of such organizational control reconfigurations requires the interoperation with the rest of the control logic during runtime. This book chapter illustrates a model that makes this interoperation possible: ALSOS-ICS, the Application-level Self-Organization Services for Internet-scale Control Systems. Four incremental protection levels for the robustness of the Smart Power Grid illustrate the requirements of organizational control reconfigurations and the applicability of ALSOS-ICS in this domain

This chapter presents a step by step sizing procedure of High Speed Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators (HSPMSGs) for smart grid applications to be driven by micro-turbines. The final design offers significant reductions in both weight and volume in a power range of 5-500 kW. A rotor length to diameter ratio is used as an important design parameter. The results are depicted by 3D plot figures for sizing of a number of machines. The simulation of generators sizing is performed using MATLAB. Then; it proposes the optimized sizing of (HSPMSGs) for the same applications. Unconstrained minimization for total losses; constrained optimized total mass with bounded constraints is introduced: a genetic algorithm is formulated for efficiency maximization; in the second genetic problem formulation, attempt is made to obtain minimum mass machine sizing that is constrained by the non-linear constraint function of machine losses; and finally, an optimum torque per ampere genetic sizing is predicted. For all optimization processes, three optimizing variables are selected. The optimized and genetic results are depicted in three-dimensional figures for initial and detailed sizing. The simulation of generator sizing is performed using MATLAB Optimization Toolbox and its Genetic Algorithm. Finally, six analytical design example comparisons are introduced with study of rotor losses.

The mechanical behavior of a military vehicle during off-highway operation is complex and highly nonlinear. Some current vehicle concepts include added intelligence through the implementation of sensors and controllers to enable autonomous or semi-autonomous operations. Control systems have typically been developed with controls software where the mechanical plant and sensors are represented as simplified and often linearized blocks, resulting in a poor vehicle assessment. This paper describes the development of an integrated environment for a control system, mechanical system dynamics, and sensor simulation for an improved assessment of the vehicle system performance. The vehicle chosen is an autonomous robot that attempts to follow a prescribed path along an off-highway terrain. The effect of including a stability controller for vehicle mobility is assessed. The architecture of the integrated simulation environment is described and its potential to improve schedule and reduce risk of the development of mechatronic military vehicle systems is explored.

The report presents the results of a study of failure prognosis of mechanical components of propulsive transmissions and gearboxes of Army aircraft. The step from on-line determination of component current mechanical condition by inferential,or diagnostic,methods to condition prognosis appears feasible if diagnostic techniques of the signature-composite interpretive type are used and diagnostic information is blended with inputs from the areas of component design theory, tribology,system abnormal physiology,and life predictive theory. For current component status determination,use of dynamic and lubricant-carried particle content signatures was found to be of greatest value. Use of the composite exceedance method in the dynamic data interpretation area and use of statistical methods recently developed in fluid-borne particle metrology in the lubricant particle content area would be indicated for attaining prognostic objectives.

Specifically, the agents developed are for fault location, reconfiguration, and restoration. The agents are designed using simulation software tools, and then implemented in two laboratory harware prototypes.

This thesis explores an application of a con-resistant trust mechanism to improve the performance of communications-based special protection systems to further enhance their effectiveness and resiliency. New initiatives in the energy sector are paving the way for the emergent communications-based smart grid technology. Smart grids incorporate modern technologies in an effort to be more reliable and efficient. However, with the benefits of this new technology comes added risk. This research utilizes a con-resistant trust mechanism as a method to quickly identify malicious or malfunctioning protection system nodes in order to mitigate the resulting instabilities in the smart grid. The feasibility and performance of this trust architecture is demonstrated through experiments comparing a simulated special protection system implemented with a con-resistant trust mechanism and without via an analysis of variance statistical model. The simulations yield positive results when implementing the con-resistant trust mechanism within the communications- based special protection system for the smart grid.

Over the past few decades, manufacturing has evolved from a more labor-intensive set of mechanical processes (traditional manufacturing) to a sophisticated set of information-technology-based processes (advanced manufacturing). Given these changes in advanced manufacturing, the National Intelligence Manager for Science and Technology in the Office of the Director of National Intelligence asked the Institute for Defense Analyses to identify emerging global trends in advanced manufacturing and to propose scenarios for advanced manufacturing 10 and 20 years in the future. The study team sought to answer the following questions: What are converging trends in advanced manufacturing across technology areas. What are emerging trends in advanced manufacturing in specific technology areas. What are enabling factors that affect success in creating advanced manufacturing products, processes, and enterprises. This chapter deals with hierarchical model predictive control (MPC) of smart grid systems. The design consists of a high-level MPC controller, a second level of so-called aggregators, which reduces the computational and communication-related load on the high-level control, and a lower level of autonomous consumers. The control system is tasked with balancing electric power production and consumption within the smart grid, and makes active use of the flexibility of a large number of power producing and/or power consuming units. The load variations on the grid arise on one hand from varying consumption, and on the other hand from natural variations in power production from e.g. wind turbines. The consumers represent energy-consuming units such as heat pumps, car batteries etc. These units obviously have limits on how much power and energy they can consume at any given time, which impose constraints on the optimisation taking place at the higher levels of the control system. This chapter presents a novel method for computing the aggregated constraints without approximation, yielding better utilisation of the units when the load variations are large. The method is demonstrated through simulation of a smart grid containing consumers with very different characteristics. It is demonstrated how (he novel aggregation method makes it possible for the top level controller to treat all these as one big consumer, significantly simplifying the optimisation.
