    The goals of the research programs in the Center for Autonomous Solar Power are to conduct research and development in thin film solar cells on flexible substrates for low cost fabrication on roll-to-roll manufacturing. The materials chosen are earth abundant and non-toxic. The expected outcome is very low cost solar cells that will be competitive in performance and well below current market prices in dollars/wall. Flexible solar cells are useful in building integrated photovoltaic systems and in military applications in austere environments. A related research program focuses on ultracapacitors using new materials. With sufficiently high energy densities, ultracapacitors can replace batteries for energy storage and offer other advantages in long lifetimes and in tolerating operating temperature ranges.

    This report describes the activities of the Energy Storage group over FY2012. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) supports energy storage R&D under the Vehicle Technologies Program at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The DOE Energy Storage Programs charter is to develop battery technologies that will enable large market penetration of electric drive vehicles. These vehicles could have a significant impact on the nation's goal of reducing dependence on imported oil and gaseous pollutant emissions. DOE has established several program activities to address and overcome the barriers limiting the penetration of electric drive battery technologies: cost, performance, safety, and life. These programs are: (1) Advanced Battery Development (through the United States Advanced Battery Consortium (USABC)); (2) Battery Testing, Analysis and Design; (3) Applied Battery Research (ABR), and (4) Focused Fundamental Research, or Batteries for Advanced Transportation Technologies (BATT).

    This report describes an algorithm, implemented in Matlab/Simulink, designed to reduce the variability of photovoltaic (PV) power output by using a battery. The purpose of the battery is to add power to the PV output (or subtract) to smooth out the high frequency components of the PV power that that occur during periods with transient cloud shadows on the PV array. The control system is challenged with the task of reducing short-term PV output variability while avoiding overworking the battery both in terms of capacity and ramp capability. The algorithm proposed by Sandia is purposely very simple to facilitate implementation in a real-time controller. The control structure has two additional inputs to which the battery can respond. For example, the battery could respond to PV variability, load variability or area control error (ACE) or a combination of the three.

    The color and shape feature are very important quality characteristic for classification of fruits. The dominant grading color histogram feature and radius normal angle histogram feature were presented in this paper. They can well represent the color and shape information of fruits respectively and are not sensitive to the changes of scale, translation and rotation. Experiment results showed both histogram features can effectively distinguish between different grade fruits and have high classification accuracy. They are suitable for real-time application.

    This technical report is duplicative documentation of the approved doctorial thesis of one of the co-authors. The research was funded in part by the U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Research, Development, and Engineering Center (AMRDEC) for the development of micromechanical sensors under the Army Technology Objective (ATO) of Sensor, Warhead, and Fuzing Technology Integrated for Combined Effects (SWFTICE). Particular technical progress at AMRDEC within this report includes resonant array processing (Chapter 3), electrets integration with Microelectromechanical Systems (MEMS) with localized heater fabrication for wafer bonding and microcharging grids for in-situ charging using microcoronas (Chapter 4), and processing of MEMS transducers (Chapter 5).

    This book chapter addresses the intelligent power management of a hybrid - fuel cell/energy storage- distributed generator connected to a power grid, it presents an adaptive neuro-fuzzy control strategy to manage the active power between the two power sources: fuel cell and battery. A validated PEM (Proton Exchange membrane) fuel cell dynamic model along with dynamic models for the battery bank, the boost DC/DC converter and the three-phase grid-connected inverter are given. Simulation results are provided to illustrate the power management scheme. They show that the real and reactive power delivered by the fuel cell system to the utility grid can be controlled as desired, while the state of charge of the battery and the utilization factor of the fuel cell are maintained well within their prescribed ranges.

    This research analyzes the potential reduction in battery lease payments for plug-in electric vehicles (PEVs) in California that incorporate the value from postvehicle, stationary provision of grid services. PEV batteries repurposed into distributed electrical storage appliances (DESAs) might provide valuable services to electricity customers, utilities, and regional grid operators alike, with improved grid operation, deferred costly upgrades, and support for the penetration and profitability of intermittent renewable energy. This research advances methods for analyzing combined vehicular and postvehicular value and uses new and increasingly sophisticated inputs, including specific PEV characterizations and value for 19 grid applications. The results showed positive but sometimes modest potential benefits. Bounding scenarios all showed reductions in battery lease payments. For the Chevy Volt-based example, which exhibited a 22reduction in the base case, the bounding scenarios ranged from 1to 32. Monte Carlo analysis indicated that the point estimates that were developed might need downward adjustment to account for uncertainty, a situation that would possibly negate second-life benefit. The analysis indicated that if valuable regulation revenues were hotly contested and provided limited impetus to DESA commercialization, value from multiple applications would be necessary to support profitability. This possibility makes the artful combination of services a critical uncertainty. One previously identified combination of multiapplications related to servicing local air-conditioning loads was examined as the base case and was found to be attractive. Another important uncertainty is the cost of power-conditioning requirements, which must also be optimized or reduced with specific combined-load profiles, for example, through coupling DESAs with local photovoltaics.
